Looks like I'll have to start playing HL2 with a Leadtek A350 video card (a GeForce FX 5900XT model).

Given the problems with DX9 that are associated with the 5xxx line of nvidia cards, is HL2 going to play real bad or not?

I haven't read anything about nvidia offering a fix for the DX9 probs. Anyone give me some help on how best to play Hl2 with this card?

It will run fine, as it will run in DX8.1 mode by default.

You can use a code in the shortcut to run it in DX9 mode but it will be a lot slower.
Nvidia uses their CineFX engine and that's what you bought into. It does DX9 but in their own way as MS and ATI created the standard when Nvidia quit the group. Blame Nvidia again.

I Currently have the same video card, upgraded from a 5600 256mb, The reason why i went to the 5900 was because of the problems that the 5600 had, I have herd that the 5900XX has had much less problems then the lowe 5xxx series have had, i passes all the stress tests, ( 62.1 FPS ) and am not worried at all because playing source has had no problems at all. Other then the fact that i am not very good at it, but all in all I think we will be fine.

Thanks for the info.

Since it'll run DX 8.1 by default, it makes me wonder which nvidia driver I should be using, since the newest ones are all geared toward the 6xxx line and DX 9.

Which driver were you using Sin? 62 FPS sounds great. Was your anti-aliasing on or off?
