First off, I am NOT affiliated w tomshardware.com in anyway,
however I AM a rabid tomshardware.com fan!,

Tom's son just graduated high school and they posted an article on him building an entire gaming PC from scratch for under $1,000! It includes a complete list of what he used and how he fared on his first build. In my opinion this article should be required reading for all of the many teens surfing these forums for HW upgrade/build advice!

Just a little FYI for ya guys, I know we have a lot of HW newbies that lurk for some info like this.

later, ed

Good, but without a DVD-rom, soud card, both essential gaming comp parts for today.

and :
A few things should be mentioned in fairness. Two mistakes were made in the assembly process that could have been made even by someone with more experience. First, Dylan didn't realize that he needed to put offsets in before installing the motherboard, which could have potentially damaged it. Second, he got the RAM modules installed in the wrong order, which doesn't really hurt anything but kept the machine from starting on the first try while he went back to the manual.

Did you not already have an identical thread?

mobo has built in sound, and i dont really think that a dvd drive is as much a requirement as a cdrom as of yet.

this thread got moved back over here, hence the dbl post, but not by me, i posted another copy over on the newbie board for them, I felt this article was more important to them than the DIY crowd on this board.

it seems that a lot of the boards and threads here sort of crossover each other at times so i was unsure of where to post.. sorry if i caused any confusion or stepped on a toe or two.. ed

OBTW is was not tom's son as it turns out,
it was these two guys father and son: george and dylan walsh.

this makes me realize that you should never post until AFTER coffee!!

It was a good first PC build.
It was a good article and fits that purpose well.

Obviously some parts could be changed based on preference. I thought it was priced a bit high but then I noticed they included the monitor. I have priced a 800$ system before (no monitor) which included an A64 cpu/9800pro off newegg.

I know of no mobo with similar sound capabilities to a good SB Audigy 2.

They promoted it as "high-end gaming machine", but without some good 6.1 sound when top of the line would be a Terratec 7.1
