What new G-Man related info/dialogue do we get in episode 2? Enlighten me.

Eli mentions that G-Man warned him right before the Black Mesa incident happened. As for G-Man's actual dialog, he takes some interest in Alex and says he have you escort her to White Forrest, I think he wanted to stop the combine's portal .

Best as I can tell, he just wants Alyx to relay his message

We discovered that the Gman delivered the crystal from Nihilanth's chamber to Black Mesa, and that minutes before it all began he whispered "Unforseen Consequences" to Eli. He then saved Alyx from Black Mesa, who was just a child.

He now has a clear interest in Alyx and I think from this we can also assume that the Gman and Eli had a few 'words' before Gordon was returned to Earth to fight the Combine.

You know, when I heard about him saving Alyx, that was one of the things that I had suspected of him. From what we knew of how Alyx survived, it didn't make any sense how she could've come away unharmed--at least until Eli reached her. I always expected some outside involvement on that one, and when Valve had started saying, "G-man and Alyx have a connection," that seemed what it must be.

From the Nihilanth's chamber? How'd youfigure that? There were crystals like that all over Xen...

God I love the G-Man :)

quick question which may sound stupid, but what is the code for the spoiler thingies?

[ spoiler] and [ /spoiler] without the spaces

Laidlaw confirmed it. Apparently they always wanted to make the distinction obvious, but didn't get round to it.

Here's my take:

Eli made a deal with the devil to save Alyx from Black Mesa (perhaps even offering to give his own life to save hers), and by G-Man's own admission, he did this for Eli against "objections" that she served no practical purpose. He somehow knew (perhaps by travelling through time) that she was very special, and he states that silencing those objections was "out of the question", and that he could only ignore them. The only thing missing from this puzzle is what Eli's end of the deal was, or if there even was one. He knows that his "investment wasn't squandered" with Alyx, so he's effectively flipping the switch on her in the fight against the Combine, an entity with whom I believe he is currently at odds with. By allowing the death of her father under the guise of "unforeseen consequences", she will obviously seek vengeance and retribution against the Combine on an unprecedented level. Certainly, he could have stopped Eli's death, but why should he when he can fully bring her over to his cause?

G-Man waited until he could leverage his investment in Alyx against the Combine before deciding to allow Eli's death. He could have allowed it to happen at any time, so why did he wait until now? Obviously, he sees an opportunity for humanity to strike at the Combine, and he's ensuring that Alyx will give her life to destroy them, perhaps so blinded by rage that she becomes a very different person. Perhaps she'll become so blinded by rage that she may even turn her back on Gordon and the Resistance to seek her own vengeance and retribution. That would make her character arc particularly interesting, and allow for some very unexpected twists ...

Isn't G-Man a genius?

Good speculation, but I don't think you're completely right with the first part. I don't think Eli had a thing to do with the G-Man rescuing Alyx from Black Mesa - and the G-Man referenced other people (who we don't know anything about I'm guessing) objecting to this because they couldn't see how it would be useful... but I don't think Eli was involved there.

I think what Samon said is probably all we know for sure.

I don't think G-Man would have had to make any deal with Eli in order to save Alyx. G-Man saw Alyx as a worthy "invenstment" just like Freeman who was worth saving for any possible future purpose.

Nah, he said that he thought nothing of her at the time, but something about his morals making him do it...he didnt expect her to become the figurehead she is now...

Huh? When did he say this? I do not recall one word signifying that.

Also, can we drop the spoiler tags? If you're in a topic called "G-man revelations" in the Episode Two section a mere day after its release, I would hope one would assume thar be spoilers abound. If not... aren't you a bit retarded?

We do it because I had an emotional outburst relating to spoiler tags yesterday! :)

When I plucked her from Black Mesa, I acted in the face of objections that she was a mear child and of no practical use to anyone. I have learned to ignore such naysayers when quelling them was out of the question.

So yeah, nothing about morals, but Alyx was underestimated...

Err... what he says contradicts your post. He obviously did think something of her at the time and had plans involving her. He saved her in spite of the objections of others. Not because of his moral compass, but because he saw a worthwhile investment while others did not.

Well excuse me! Ive had like 8 hours of sleep the past 2 days and a mid-term today! I had a lot on my mind, which was running at half capacity! :P

First post on these forums. So I'll try to make it a good one.

At first I thought the G-man was somehow linked to aperture science but after playing through portal, and no sight of him, I've had to reluctantly abandon that theory.

What I prefer to focus on is Alyx and the events at the begining of Ep1. The G-man's plans. What would have happened at the end of half life 2 proper if the Vorts hadn't pulled you and Alyx out of there?

Lets see, from what we see in the beginning of Episode 1, the G-man had apparently abandoned Alyx to die in the explosion of the citadel. She'd served an important purpose in HL2, but perhaps her purpose was done. (apparently corroborated by the g-man's dialog in a video, while looking over Alyx: "You shouldn't be here, forget about all this.") She dies, you get taken back into the G-man's custody. The main difference is that the citadel goes up like a roman candle again but no one discovers the transmission about Judith and the Borealis.

The 'price' as it were for her survival, would be her father's death. This means that the original plan he had was for the old man to survive. So them finding out about the Borealis had to be countered by killing off Eli. The first thing he seems to want to do is destroy the technology within. This would tend to promote the idea that the G-man does not want the Borealis to be destroyed. For whatever goals, I can only speculate.

Good theory, but you mention the Gman preview...fact is, almost nothing that was in the Ep2 previews was actually seen in Ep2...it was all a ruse.

Well, that was what they had planned at the time, but it changed over development. That incongruity between the trailers (particularly the one after finishing Ep1) and the actual released product is something they said they were going to try and avoid in the future. Hence why there's no trailer for Ep3 after you beat the game.

Posted this in a thread over in the portal forum but copied and pasted it here! Portal spoilers!

Hello!, Would have put a picture up, but thought about this while I'm at work! During the one test with the companion cube, in the back room there are pictures of the companion cube and all the writing!

But one picture stood out! It is a picture of a man in a suit, with a vest on! And under the picture it looks like "C. Johnson" is written! Now, the face is obscured with a companion cube plastered over the picture, but his hair cut sure looks familiar like a certain stalker we all know from Half life 2! If anyone can get a screen grab that would be great.

There is no way GMan is Cave Johnson, because he died in 1979 due to exposure to mercury and subsequent kidney failure and brain damage. The man was a lunatic.

I was thinking more along the lines, although I didn't say this in any of my posts! That GLaDOS has evolved and become the GMAN, using Cave Johnson as a source for her form! I mean someone posted earlier he sounds like a computer! Not setting this in stone and in no way is this theory perfect but just something to think about!

I dont think so...GLaDOS has some power, but not the ability to move between dimensions and directly control people like that...

For a moment there, I was like "Who the heck is Cave Johnson??" I completely missed that wrinkle.

I found this forum post (Again, might be old news to you guys, and tell me if the info is bogus.) http://forums.gametrailers.com/showthread.php?p=5081068

Despite being crazy, this character, as well as Aperture Science in general seems linked to the g-man's abilities. Time flowing backward for a person could produce an ability to tell what the future's events are going to be due to memory change. (something like Merlin's abilities, as time supposedly flowed backward for this legendary figure) The entry about "Tier 3, the 'man-sized ad hoc quantum tunnel through physical space" screamed G-man.

Okay, I'm back on the boat that the G-man's somehow linked with Aperture.

(Even tho most of the info on that readout seems fabricated and silly. Still, after playing Portal through in one long run late at night with limited sleep, this data makes almost TOO much sense. xD)
