Well, let me just explain a few things: Firstly, my computer is old. Three years I've had her, and she's starting to break down. I plugged in 2 fans (about a fortnight apart). The first one somehow made my motherboard stop detecting the inbuilt LAN socket, and the second has just stopped the onboard sound working.

So. Is there anything I can do to fix this? It's really pissing me off.

P.S. Drivers are all up-to-date, and I know it's not that.

What wattage PSU do you have? What else do you have plugged into it? Does unplugging the fans make the LAN and sound work again? Are the fans plugged onto the motherboard via the 3 pin connectors or via the 4 pin molex connectors on the PSU?

EDIT: checked and it's a 450W PSU, uuh my Graphics card, Harddrive, DVD and CD drives, Floppy drive. No unplugging the fans does not make them work again, 3 pin connectors

interesting... sorta sounds like a power issue but they don't come back so obviously not and it's a decent PSU too.

In your BIOS set up, is there options to enable/reenable the intergrated peripherals? Check out for on-board LAN and audio options.

Well recently I've been having lots of trouble with heat and stuff in my computer (hence the fans) so I've been in my bios quite a bit. I'll have a proper check though now.

EDIT: Yeah turns out some random entry in the bios turned it off :\. worst bios ever. LAN still not working though :(

So the LAN is still enabled in the BIOS but doesn't work in Windows?

Are there any problems in Device Manager?

What make is the power supply, and is the Wattage stated the Peak, or the Average ?

Lol, you got the nail on the head. Maybe its the PSU breaking and not the motherboard.

Its the all of the symptoms of failing PSU. It does start to blackout components like Fans not spinning at full RPM and devices failing because of lack of adequate and sufficient power flow, and devises start to heat up since fans aren't spinning at full force. also just like any other blackouts all devises will not boot-up or stay booted long. Trust me and hook up MOBO with different PSU and see what happens, if you have an extra 0one laying around somewhere.

Good Luck.

i agree check in device manager like chris said but like barney said it could be a possibility the psu is dying

Hmmm yeah I tried another PSU and it's all working now :E

Thanks for the help guys!

I wish my PSU had given me signs of it failing before it died. I turned it on and it just burnt out taking the Motherboard with it. ;(

Would anyone happen to know the chances of the CPU surviving an insident like this? While I got my P4 3.2GHz about £50 cheaper than the typical price they are way overpriced now.

I've found that the CPU normally stays pretty safe during incidents like that; but potentially if the PSU takes out the board, the board could take out everything that's attached to it: everything. Rare, but not impossible.

The RAM, graphics card and HDD's did survive so hopefully that means the CPU did too. My friend told me that the CPU usually goes with it but that's just from experience with old 486/Pentium boards.

Unfortunatly, I can't test it at the moment as I have no spare Socket 478 Mobo.

Well there are two ways PSU dies, (I think) one is that: It gets weak and dies, like our friend dekstar's beloved PSU. and then you got the PSU going away with a (Big-Bang) by way of the Volts-regulator in the PSU, dying first, when that happens, you got unregulated flow of current into mainboard, and everything that's attached to it is at the mercy of the PSU, I cant really tell you who dies first, order, but few casualties do happen, and the collateral.

Good Luck.
