So much for the Surprise that Gabe promised! I gotta say that it seems that a lot of folks are pretty bent about not getting a HL2DM game to go along with this. I am absolutely sure that the fanboys will flame me but: Here is is:

Hey Gabe, We are pretty disappointed! And so much for Valve caring about not pissing off their customers. (the ATI Rant)

We did EXPECT a HL2DM!

I and many others like me wanted HL2 for the DM. Quite frankly I for one am sick of CS and wanted HL2DM.

Heck, I was even planning a dedicated server!

Well back to Unreal 2004.

Yes, I'm disappointed, but not because I wanted DM... I just wanted... something...

There'll be a mod out about 10 minutes after the game ships.

Oh well. At least the game's done. Can't wait for DOD: Source :D

Wait until HL2 is in your hands to make a dumb thread like this, Valve still has something up their sleeve...

Cs:S is good enough for me. Sure I would enjoy it but it doesnt phase me at all at all.

you realize that gabe didn't promise HL2DM...you just led yourself to believe that the surprise was indeed HL2DM

and I guess people keep missing "with a few surprises" when Icarus interviewed Chuck Osborn

i hated hldm, but hl2dm had real potential....just wait for it to be modded in i just...

but honestly, what the hell did you want for a HL2DM? I bet you'd be disappointed with that too, besides, DM is old hat, CS:S gameplay is definitely a step up, no matter what anyone says, and honestly, i didn't want another Doom 3 multiplayer, because that just sucked

I'm sure Gabe is really bummed, dude. I can hear him now, "OMFG, mjrhzrd expected HL2DM and we didn't deliver!"

How many people play HLDM compared to CS? It's always been silly to think they'd spend that much time on something that was only going to be shadowed by their psuedo-mods.

I, for one, totally disagree the idea of expecting HL2DM and think it makes perfect sense to stick with updating CS, TF, DOD, etc..

and it will suck ass. just what we need a billion rushed hl2mp mods

I think there's gonna be a hl2dm because its a suprise
Chunk can say he played hl2 but nothing about the mp
Atleast thats what i think

Good game and one of the reasons I suspect they didn't do HL2DM: they wouldn't have been able to compete with the "big boys" of Multiplayer gaming. Most multi tacked onto FPS don't get played much. I doubt Doom3 multi will be burning up the Internet for very long.

I'm disappointed, too. Let's just support those modders and let it go.....

tf and dod will be nice. its just a really boring launch for mp.

true, no one has ever said thatr HL2DM was on the board, people just Assumed it was because of HL having one. It is always over rated tbh, hldm, not reallt great.. hl is singeplayer, the mods are the online part!!!

yeah :p

by the time we're done with SP there should be a good MP mod out.

I'm a little dissapointed but really you guys have to put all of this into context:

Alright will anybody tell me I am wrong about this?

The only difference between Valve creating an official Death match or leaving one out for the modding community to create is the following:
Maps won't be the same and you won't get it as soon as the game is released.

Now is that such a big loss? No really tell me, is this such a big loss?

Its not like Valve sat idly on their asses during a time when they could have been creating a HL2 death match now did they? They spent that time working on and perfecting the Single Player no doubt right?

So what we will end up with most likely and hopefully is a single player game that will be utterly fantastic and will end up getting its own multiplayer from the modding community that aside from the maps would basically be the exact same as if Valve had done it themselves.

i am disappointed as well :(
i wonder if Valve are actually surprised tho.. i mean some of them pple read these forums.. and im sure they read somewhere how much pple were looking forward to HL2DM/TDM.

DOD:S Will be the best of the source mods
Yeah... or TFCS. :p

But no... they chose CS... oooh, the game doesn't really need any of the improvments Source offers... let's just put pointless barrels and shaders in! :hmph: Oh and don't forget... bodies look kind of cool when they die now!

are you nuts? you just said the same thing. if it comes out in a week its going to suck

I love it when people try to speak for the community.

I for one, am not overly disappointed. While another form of MP would have been nice, I'd of likely never played it more than a few times (unless it was really REALLY good).

They were revamping HL (pointless) and CS (boring) while they could have been doing an HL2DM. I can't see that CS:S players will be able to keep up their interest long. It's the same maps they've played for years on end with new textures and bodies that flop around in silly ways.

It was confirmed a LONGGGGGGGG time ago by doug that HL2's only Multiplayer was CSS, but everyone just sat back and ignored that small piece of info, so they could all come together right now and cry like a bunch of little girls

HL2+CSS+HLS(RC) what a rip

Next thing you guys'll want a free Snickers bar

Send an e-mail and ask him for gods sake. and tell him not to add "it'll be easy to mod it in".

OMG!! Valve please make a HL2DM!! Many people will thank you! ;(

one of the dangers of valve not doing it officially is its not guaranateed that there will be a definitive mod, let alone a well-done mod. and if things aren't official, communities are much harder to form. and if valve doesn't release the SP source maps, which i have a hunch they wont, there are gonig to be a lot of fruity maps. it looks ugly already

Honestly I thought Half Life DM sucked. I wouldn't think I would enjoy Half Life 2 DM or something, CS:S is more of my flavor. Although I find CS quite lame as well, CS:S feels more realistic somehow, BTW Ravenshield still pwnz.

Yeah. Folks need to realize that 99% of those 300+ announced mods will never make it to a production stage, and of those that do, only a handful will be any good.

Good mods take a good long time. Don't expect mod magic right out of the gate -- or even out of the gate quite a ways.

Yeah.. I can see that. I mean, I will play CS:S, but it was never my favorite. None the less, I still feel it was the most logical decision considering the number of people that will actually play HL2DM vs. mods...

On the bright side, Bloodlines's multiplayer sounds very promising. :)

*sigh* One of the reasons I got back into FPS this year was playing the UT2k4 demo, which blew me away. I was hoping HL2 would be able surpass it in mp(no need to even talk about the sp, everyone knows it'll be godly).

Disappointing to say the least. Oh well.

Definitely. Bloodlines' mp seems to include everything I wanted from the HL2 mp. Story/team/objective-based maps bringing vampires against hunters, AND with xp to buy powers/equipment.

Bloodlines has gone way up in my list after this announcement.

True, In DOD:S, th physics would enhance the WW2. Same kinda goes with TF:S

I enjoyed HL DM immensely. It had the trip mines and C4 packs you could create nifty traps with -- which added an element of strategy and stealth. The rocket launcher with the laser guidance was a hoot. I'm tired of "realism" mods. Seems that's all anyone does anymore.

I'd have CS over HLDM any day, just like 85% of the HL community, so you're in the minority, and since it's impossible to keep everyone happy, you have to follow the majority.
I couldn't care less about HL2DM, something else other than DM would have been fun though, but I won't lose any sleep over it.

err... We don't know if its all the same maps do we? They could have added more, also its not like the modding community can't create new ones that will also really take advantage of the physics.

Also I can't understand how you can say that the Counter-Strike Community will get bored with it. They have been playing on Dust, Aztec, etc. for years and its still going strong.
