GS: Everybody wants to know when Half-Life 2 will be in stores. What can you say about the release date?

GN: I hate release dates because no matter how hard we try, we screw them up. We held back talking about our release date going into September 30 because I wanted to have a much clearer idea of what day we were going to ship on.

Right now all we can say is holidays of this year, which to me feels really unfortunate. Our customers really want to know. They say, "Tell us what the date is going to be," and that's what they want to hear. They're fine with what the date is; they just want to know so they can plan accordingly.

Doesn't sound like November to me :(

"which to me feels really unfortunate"

What does this mean really? More i read it, more confused i get.
Unfortunate how?

looks to me like he's saying it feels unforunate to him because all he can say is "holidays of this year" rather than giving us a specific date right away. this is also supported by his next sentence.

Hmm, guess i was seeing things.
Reading that made me think releasing it in the Holidays would be unfortunate for them for some reason.

Oh well.

what gabe said in that interview is fine and great but I still don't understand:

1. why valve didn't announce the delay sooner than merely 3 days before the expected release date? They knew it all along but didn't care to tell the consumers about it which will spend money on HL2 and enrich Gabe so he can eat even more!

2. why Gabe didn't loose a single word about the benchmark which should also have been released on the 30th September. They made that announcement just 2 weeks ago and suddenly valve refuses to have said anything about the benchmark.

3. which holiday Gabe precisely means with "holidays of this year". He couldn't be more unprecise. Saying "anytime later this year" would have been precise and fair to the customers. This is BS.

In summary, one can say that even Gabe can no longer be trusted. The game will be out when it's out and maybe even it will be postponed until next year? Who knows? With the current valve PR skills everything is possible.

2. it was an interview, the interviewer didnt ask about the benchmark.

3. this year is almost over, does it really matter which holiday? the "holiday season" is basically mid-end of october until the end of december.

so its pretty much like saying "anytime later this year"

2. It was an interview, yes, so what? Is he not allowed to say a word about something many people are expecting him to say. You know what the problem is with valve? It's communication or more precise the lack of it.

Let's see, your reasoning is as follow. Gabe: "hm, we announced the release of the benchmark just two weeks ago, and we missed that date. Should I say no something about it since I already started with telling the interviewer how sorry I feel for the HL2 delay and yada yada yada. No, I'm not going to say something about the benchmark which everyone was expecting to death because the interviewer didn't ask me about it. Yeah, that's right. I don't care for the thousand people waiting to benchmark their system in order to update it accordingly.

3. not bad, you did get my point. When he meant to release the benchmark anytime later this year he should have said it so and not mumble something about a holiday this year. Be honest, do you still trust Gabe? Do you really believe this "release later on a holiday this year"? Who can say for sure that they won't miss the "one holiday this year" release date?
