I have a lap top and recently installed this that a friend gave to me.

My system specs aren't great, but should be able to run this game;

512 RAM
256 Graphics card
2GhZ (Atleast)

The game runs fine until I hit a checkpoint where it loads, saves and then crashes with a generic system error. I checked the specific code and it mentioned something about a datacache.dll file or something, but it didn't seem important.

I wanted to know if anyone else had this problem and how it an be fixed. Sorry I can't be much more help.

Thanks

I recently gifted HL2 to my friend and he is having the exact same problem.

You need Steam to use HL2, so it's obvious the op must have it.

Anyways, it was given through Orange Box gifts.
Any help would be appreciated.

actually, pirate copies have many issues like this, and the pirate copies do NOT need steam. so anyone that is playing HL2 WITHOUT steam, is a pirate, and will be treated as such. that is why people always ask "do you have steam?". most pirates dont know that all legal versions require steam, so they say "no" and are busted. no steam = pirate = no help here + forward ip to authorities. thanks for forcing that explanation so that now this guy might say "yep i have steam" so we dont know hes a pirate, and we'll not find out if he is a pirate. gg

youre th second persn to call me a "shatsa". what is it, and why is my post / me like it?

What's the error you get? Can you screenie it please?

Basic instructions would be to reinstall the game and/or to verify the system cache.

Shasta is/was an infamous, impolite flamer on this forum is what I understand. A flamer is someone who says impolite things in E-mail, IRC, Discussion boards, etc. a.k.a A severe lack of and/or disregard to netiquette, which is a portmanteau of "network etiquette". (Just in case you don't know what that is either, you ignorant thing you!;)) Oops now I'm a hipocrite!:D I do feel your frustration though, pirates only makes things worse for honest people.

Well... honestly I paid my money and don't give a crap about piracy.
So reinstall or 'verify the system cache.' how does one go about doing that?

you do it in steam. right click the game (in steam) and click "verify game cache". It sorts out most problems.

Stewie's right guy, that option is only available through Steam, as in it's only in the Steam Control Panel. Dude, if you really want to play HL2, save yourself some grief and buy the legitimate copy. A part of Valve's goal with Steam is to make it as inconvenient as possible for pirates as well as people who buy their stuff. Whoever you bought that copy from, you got JIPPED!:D Kind of like that guy who would buy marijuana from some punk on the street corner only to find out he's been given grass and not grass. Can you say JIPPED!?

boy do i miss shasta and all of the pointless arguments we had. he went to no limits to make sure he was always right

Looks like Stewie's gonna be working overtime chewing people out over pirated, non-Steam copies of HL2. I'm starting to see more and more threads about "crashes" and "fixes" that seem suspiciously Steam-less.:naughty:

I have all HL games original through Steam, and HL2 always worked fine before, but now I appear to be having this problem too, when it loads a new level it just hangs, or gives an error message. Have Valve made any updates to HL2 that could have caused this for some people?

I've been getting the exact same errors as well, and I DO have steam installed. bought the Orange Box this past weekend. TF2 and Portal both run with NO problems.

It's the first time I've played Half Life 2 andit's kind of frustrating having to reload all the time...

i do agree though, the verify and also defrag cache files does help for a little while, but the crashes always come back.

it's because of your system specs, I had the exact same problem when I wanted to play HL2 on my dad's lap top (dell inspiron 710, it's specs are like your lap top)
the game crashed every time it wanted to autosave. I also had problems with my flashlight, it wouldn't show anything in the dark.
i know it's frustrating, but you have to play the game on a better computer.
