Game "Freezes" at random moments.

I have a newly installed version of Half-Life 2 on my nephews PC. I recently added 256mb RAM and a new DVD drive in order for him to play it. I am experiencing random "lock ups" (freezes) in the game; sometimes at the start (on the options screen), sometimes a bit later in the first chapter. The video just freezes and I have to reboot. My system specs are below and I have all the latest drivers. I'm running with "medium" graphics options at 800x600. Any hints? (could be sound I guess but focus on graphics at the mo!).

Does anyone have any useful ideas I can try? I'm in the process of going through old ATI drivers to see if one works! I want to get this sorted this evening ready for my nephew. Hes been looking forward to playing Half Life 2 for about 2 years now ;).
