Game loads, comp restarts

Whenever I load half life 2 or cs:s, the game loads to the start screen, then pretty much right away, my computer restarts.

my specs are:

Athlon T-Bird 1.2gHz (I know, it's pathetic)
NVidia GeForce FX 5700, 128MB
512 RAM

and so on...processor speed is minimum, but everything else is fine.

I've updated my drivers for vid card, and directX is at it's best... Any help with this matter will be much appreciated, unless you tell me to get a new processor, which is out of the question at the moment..

thanks!

Does this happen in other games?. Did it happen before you put the new graphics card in?. What’s your psu size(power supply) , if it's below 400-450 psu that most likely the reason. Mainly because your computer is trying to use more power than it requires... I believe that you have to plug one of the power cords into the graphics card correct?.

I have the same problem! The game goes to the blurred city loading screen, then after a few minutes there, the computer completely restarts! I have tried the counter strike source, and that works fine.

Specs:
Pentium 4 2.0Ghz
Geforce 4 128MB
768 RAM

Thanks for any help, I really want to feel like I did not just waste 50 bucks. :(

I had exactly the same problem! I have an AMD 2000+, 768 RAM and a GeForce 4 Ti4200. My comp kept re-starting after a few seconds on the blurred loading screen, but then I updated my gfx drivers from the NVIDIA web site. Previously i was using older drivers, cos they worked fine, and you know what they say about if its not broken... Anyway, since i updated the drivers, the game loads and plays fine! Might be worth giving it a try and seeing if it works for u? I know Nupy has already tried this, but it might work for your GF4 Stanky.

no, it doesn't happen in any other games... and i'm actually not too sure if one of the power cords goes into the graphics card lol.. how can i check that :o

Woot, thanks retrac, that did the trick.

I guess this will also double as a *bump* for Nupy's question.

I had the exact opposite fix - the new drivers (66.xx) rebooted my PC unless I forced it to play in DX7 mode (by adding a -dxlevel 70 to a shortcut properties), whereas older ones (61.76 I think) from July 04, works fine. directx 8.1 at 1024x768 and looks great (for an older Geforce 4200 card)
