Game Performance with 5.1 Sound

Does anyone get a framerate hit and system lag when playing HL2 and CS:S on 5.1 sound? I've got Medusa 5.1 Headphones and find that the game performance is near shocking compared to that of when 2/2.1 sound is on. Is it my spec.

AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Clocked to 2200MHz (Barton Core)
Flashed 9800Pro to 9800XT with 128MB RAM 5.2 Cat Drivers
1GB of full speed RAM
SB Audgy 2 ZS Platinum Pro. Up-to-date Drivers

That's about it.

If anyone else has noticed this then please post.

Don't mean to be rude but no advice please re: my setup. I have the know how but not the money for upgrading.....

I play on 5.1 surround and I notice no performance hit at all. And I use onboard audio. How shocking is the performance? Is it still playable? If it is, I'd keep it like that, the 5.1 sound is really great.
