Game returns to main menu while loading a level

Hi all,

I just installed half life 2 and I ran all the updates through steam. I got to play the game and everything was going smoothly.

I was on the first level..."heading up to the roof"...then the next level started loading and the game suddenly switched back to the main menu.....I then tried to load a saved game and the whole thing froze.

I can play the previous levels until I get to the roof and the game kicks me back to the main menu. Any ideas?

I have the latest drivers for my video card, I tried to lower the video setting inside Half Life (800X 600....everything else is set to Low)...tried to restart but still same problem!

I am running:
AMD™ ATHLON™64 2800+ CPU w/ Hyper Transport Technology
512 MB PC3200 400MHz DDR MEMORY
80GB 7200 RPM ATA 100 HARD DRIVE
NVIDIA GeForce-4 MX4000 128MB DDR AGP 8X EDITION

Well, then, that's sorted.

does not load second chapter

once 1st ch. is done. when loading 2nd ch. it kicks out to windows and give an error msg. i tried validation but still does not work
