My specs:
Pentium 4 3.2Ghz
1028 DDR2
Currently running 64MB internal video (played HL2 on a PC with a 32Mb video card and it was better) Getting a 256Mb Nvidia 6200.
Realtek AC97 audio.

Problem:
Game/sound is considerably slow and skips, considering this is a new computer and my old one ran it fine with a P4 2.6Ghz and 512Mb ram, this is weird.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Need any more details let me know.

All I can say is that the intro cut scene took ages and sounded like shit.

Skips.

Some troubleshooting steps you can take...

Run the Steam Performance Test
steam://support/?Issues=Performance*

Update your sound drivers. Since you're using onboard sound, you would go to Realtek's official site.

Defragment your hard drive.

-> Start
-> All Programs
-> Accessories
-> System Tools
-> Disk Defragmenter

Defragment your game cache files.

1. From the My Games tab, right-click on the game you would like to defragment and select Properties
2. In the Properties window select the Local Files tab at the top of the window on the far right
3. Click the Defragment cache files button
4. Once the defragmentation process has completed, you will be presented with a report detailing the extent of fragmentation

And yeah, upgrade to a video card.

will hl2 even run onboard!? my friend has a P4 and and i installed halo on there and prayed his onboard video could handle it... just barley... but its probably a different motherboard.

by the way... dont get that graphics card.... if your gonna upgrade now, go way way higher! I just upgraded to a ATI X1600pro 512Mb from that exact card ( it might actually have just had 128Mb ) and im simply just giving it away to my friend because for today's games... its not that great and its not worth that much, if you got that card you'd have to upgrade again sooner. I would suggest something else. If you low on cash... maybe a 6800, but im not that good with that kinda advise, try posting something in the hardware/software forums:

I know the 6200 is pretty low range already, but it's what came with my system package, we had to take the original out to replace in another PC, and I'm waiting on this one as a replacement.

If it were up to me I would have waited for the Core 2 Duo systems to be released, which happens to be today, but my old man was paying for the system and he needed a replacement straight away.

I work at a computer store/workshop btw.

Thanks for the input, I will try going through these today, and I will see how it goes with the video card. :)

Should get that in this week sometime.

Thanks again.

*I think it is the onboard video, all the HL2 game files were fiine, the computer is unfragmented (it is onoy 2 weeks old).

OK, recent developments:

Got the new 6600 put in.. had some troubles as the tech didn't install it properly but had that sorted after a bit of screwing around.. anyway.. had that sorted eventually (turned out it needed an additional power cord attached to it.., useless techs)

Played HL2, was so beautiful.. smooth as... for about 15 minutes..

Now I'm having more problems, the game will run for about 15 minutes and then freeze... forcing me to reboot the system.. as the computer is new I called the tech support and the tech said it sounded like either a overheating issue or a faulty mem module. So we checked the BIOS and there was no overheating issues.. downloaded a mem module testing program called "memtest86" and ran that for 7 hours, fully scanned the computer... no problems to be found... and this all started 24 hours since I got the VC installed. My old man said that it froze on him as well when he was watching a news program.

Does this sound like a VC problem, that can be fixed, or would it be faulty... or something else.. I basically have a Berlin wall around my system's security/defence, so there's a slim chance of any form of malicious ware on my system.

Any ideas, please. :cheers:

I hate my computer. My laptop could run a game better.

Yeah, the ****ed thing is my dad bought this computer recently new, and I have only just realised that is dosn't even have a PCI-E slot on the mainboard... which sucks big-time. It wasn't even a cheap ass system either.
:hmph:
