game won't start

okay, so maybe I'm a complete dumbass.
It has been a long time since I played Halflife 2 and I have decided to reinstall it. Registered and updated Steam.
So why when I click on the Halflife icon does it not start the game but just ask for different Steam selections like "store,community,friends ...etc"?

All I want to do is play the single player game.

Go to the "library" section of Steam and it should give you a list of your games, including Half-Life 2. Just double click on it there. No idea why your shortcut is acting strangely. I'd recommend deleting it and creating a new one to see if that works as intended. To create the new one just go to your Steam library again and right click on Half-Life 2 and select the "properties" option. Then there should be a button labelled "create desktop shortcut".
