I've played many of those games on the list, but how did elder scrolls 2 manage to fill in that huge map in such an old game?

Randomly generated dungeons, limited amount of art assets... regardless, there was enough non-repetitive content in Daggerfall to make it interesting. Heh, Daggerfall is still the most complex of TES games.

Besides, if you look at modern games, you'll notice that the worlds keep getting smaller and smaller.

Do they?

In the Operation Flashpoint/ArmA series they've gotten bigger.

Don't know why they're not included in this. NOT MAINSTREAM ENOUGH I GUESS

Err, how do they determine the map sizes?
The Burnout Paradise one is not as quite big as San Andreas' one in my experience, although it's displayed as much larger here.

Yeah, two isolated examples are perfect indication of the general direction. /sarcasm

Sorry but that size comparison is absolutely ridiculous and wrong. Particularly Just Cause 2 compared to San Andreas.

Anybody who says the size of that mountain in San Andreas is the size of a runway in Just Cause 2 is an idiot.

Yes Daggerfall was huge, IIRC twice the size of Great Britain.

I posted this in the image dump, but I still have trouble believing Burnout's city was that large compared to WoW's world.

Edit: Come to think of it, how are these even measured?

Probably what the developers say, which has lots of room for error in scale.

Burnout Paradise's inclusion there makes me doubt the integrity of the entire set of images. This clearly isn't a properly measured comparison.

I think Flight Simulator probably wins this one, my friend and I did a transatlantic flight in real-time back in middle school and it took like 12 hours

wow 12 hours to get across the atlantic? did they at least serve a meal?

Hell yeah, we had it on autopilot for most of the part over the ocean, watching Aqua Teen Hunger Force or some shit and baking pizza all night. Being a pilot sure ain't what it used to be.

The best part is that our 13 year-old selves were so busy high fiving each other when we finally got over Europe that we managed to crash into the side of a mountain in France while attempting to land.

i'm pleased Asheron's Call is on there, that world was great. I used to log in and just run for hours and hours across the continent. I would die numerous times of course, but it was one of the few MMO games I've played where exploring is actually fun

Yeah, I'd imagine games that didn't author original world content are excluded. Using an existing map of our Earth and major cities and airports would kinda be cheating ...

Wow, what the hell do you put in Daggerfall's huge ass world to keep everything interesting?

Personally Sins of a Solar Empire is the largest game I've played I think. Unless your talking about Half Life in which you go to pretty far lengths that are immeasurable
