gameinfo.txt error

I'm not sure what I did (if anything), the only change I made was installing Garysmod (which is since uninstalled), but when I try to run CS:S or HL2DM I get the following error:

"gameinfo.txt doesn't exist in hl2"

I have this file in all the directories it should be (I think) (SteamApps/username/game)

and they seem to be intact, each game has it's own SteamID, and Counter-Strike is set to 240 which is apparently correct (220 for HL2, etc...)

I noticed that this problem is not restricted to me, but after trawling through about 3 forums, I can't find an answer...

Man, I do remember when the worst problem you could get when playing a game was trying to set up a soundcard in DOS. Steam is pissing me off... :sniper:

Load up HL2 once.

I have tried that (I only went to the main menu and then quit). I have tried restarting Steam, tried backing up the gameinfo files (which are all there) and deleting them and then restarting Steam (it automatically generated a new one for CS but not for HL2)... this is really weird, and CRAP.

Can anyone explain to me the nature of this problem? Is it a Steam issue, or a corrupt gameinfo file, ...???
