Swedish gaming site Gamereactor has gotten the chance to interview both Valve's managing director; Gabe Newell, and its public relations manager; Doug Lombardi. Naturally, the article is in swedish, but forum member CrazyHarij has been kind enough to translate it for us and post it on the site. They cover a wide range of topics about Half-Life 2's development and its modding scene, but the most interesting section comes from the description of Half-Life 2's new AI system:

The allies Gordon will meet during the adventure will react differently depending on how the player solves different situations. They will also handle scenarios differently depending on the behaviour of other allies.
Conflicts may erupt within the group if Gordon, for instance, orders three friends to attack a group of 10 Combine-soldiers from the front without any fire support. They may also refuse to do what Gordon tells them to.
Exciting stuff indeed! Be sure to read the original article or check out our translation.

uhm... i thought it was said that you don't command any of the npcs.. so how would you even be able to tell them where to go?

Nobody said that you can't command NPCs. You can have a small squad. It's for the people who like tactics within spraying and praying.

And thanks CrazyHarij, you have gained a level! *thumbs up*

I might as well join in and say "Thxs CrazyHarij!", that was a good read thxs :)

I don't have to thank CrazyHariji, because I'm from Sweden, Bwahahahaha!! ;)
Nice read though.

You citizen attack the 3 striders with this mp5 .

JAJajajajajj

wait......

wait for a while buddy.the price of ATI cards r gonna drop cause ATI already
have tie up with Valve, so when the game is released, the gamers will puchase ATI cards ,which will ofcourse be sold like hot cakes for prices lower than nVdia's GeForce FX cards.Gabe has already told that ATI is best suited for HL2. :naughty:

Interesting... I was thinking about that the other day while watching the barricade demo. It made me think of The Thing's AI, where allies have feelings.

By the way, hi all, and thanks to CrazyHariji for the translation :) and to Gamereactor for the interview... and to Gabe and Doug for the info... and to...

so, it seems as if the ai is indeed that good like it was supposed to be.

that goes to all the people, who think it's just all scripted. ha! ;)
