ITT, list games that were a blast to play then, and still are now, but could use a fresh coat of paint.

For me, it's Age of Empires I and II. I just played a game of II and to this day it is still a blast to play. Part of the experience is the nostalgia, but regardless, they are still fun and the amount of fun I've had with them has never been matched by another game.

What is it for you?

Mario Broth....

Oh wait, NM...:|

I'd have to say X-Wing.

Dark Forces 1 and 2, thieves, and others I can't think of.

Dungeon Master, Dungeon Master II and any expansions.

Bionic Commando

Blaster (80's arcade game)

Chex Quest, but the sounds have to be exactly like they were on the old ISA Sound Blaster cards. I have the game on a revised Doom engine, but the cheese in the sounds is just not there.

UFO and Dungeon Keeper would be awesome. I'd also really like remakes of Syndicate, Little Big Adventure and a version of Magic Carpet for the Wii.

X-Com.
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.
Tiberium Dawn.

Personally and no offense to BM:S but I'd of loved to see Valve actually properly remake HL using the Source engine. I know it's not going to happen, and I'm not too sad about it, but they'd of been able to get the right voice actors in for the various roles and it would of tied up nicely, with the sequel. A lot of people who never played the original simply won't play it because it looks so awful these days (which is a pity).

Deus Ex. Great game and it still is, but again a complete refit would be fantastic. When it first came out I was really excited for the future of the FPS experience, DX hinted at a better way, one that moved away from the linear corridor shooters of old. I'd say double up and do the sequel at the same time as well. I'd dump the Unreal engine in favour of Source because it does a much better job of characterization.

System Shock 2. I never quite finished it because it scared the bejesus out of me, but it did so much right that despite the release of Bioshock, it's still worthy of a complete remake with a better more upto date game engine. Yes I'm aware of the modifications, but the dark engine had it day a long time back.

I'm sure there are many others that I could reel off, but I'd put those 3 head and shoulders above the rest.

I know it's a bit of a fun exercise to do this, but a big part of me would really like to see rebuilds happen some where down the road. There are a lot of great games out there that deserve the attention. Certainly not an easy project to carry out, but I think there's scope for a development house to start doing something like that and actually turn a profit on it. Naturally the original developers should still receive their royalties as well (50/50 split perhaps).

Battlefield 1942... would be pure sex on the BF2 engine.

Deus Ex. It's superior in most ways to the latest crop of shooters except in the enemy models and AI. That's what I'd like them to fix.

They're built on the same engine.

Quarantine would kick loads of ass with good-graphics.

If that were the case, then BF1942 would look as good graphically as BF2.
Or there'd be mods making it look as good as BF2 out by now.

Iirc, BF2's on a Refractor 2 engine while BF1942's on the Refractor 1 engine.

But, I don't really know anything technical about game engines.

deus ex that game is near the definition of perfect in my eyes :D

Outcast would be pretty damn slick with some updates.

This wondeful classic needs a remake: a new shiny truetype font

Thief 2
Crackdown
Bard's Tale 1-3
Ultima 1-5
Shadow of the Beast
Legacy of the Ancients

Ugh...so many to name. Glad that at least some games are being remade. The upcoming Bionic Commando Rearmed is the one that comes to mind and strikes me as one of the greatest remakes of all time.

It would be brillliant if Valve used all their new toys to make Half Life look the same as HL:2, that would be epic, imagine playing that awesome game again, with GOOD GRAPHICS, a decent physics engine, BETTER SCIENTISTS RAGDOLLS!!!! *drools*

X-Com, HL1, Starcraft could all benefit from graphical but not gameplay upgrades

Uh what?

X-COM: Terror from the Deep
X-COM: Apocalypse
X-COM: Interceptor
X-COM: Email games
X-COM: Enforcer
UFO: Aftermath
UFO: Aftershock - http://www.ufo-aftershock.com/images/ufo_37.jpg
UFO: Afterlight - http://www.ufo-afterlight.com/images/scr_25.jpg
UFO: Extraterrestrials - Latest most resembling the original.

you say that like any of those games (excluding TFTD) stand anywhere near the first xcom. their all poor imitations when judged against the first two. (ufo defense and tftd)

and while ET is similar to the original it's still lightyears away. (moves a bit closer with some mods)

all I literally want is the orginal that can run on vista without dosbox, graphics is a bonus but not required. everything else must be the same.

Dungeon Keeper
Deus Ex
Tiberian Dawn
Red Alert

That said, I don't actually find the graphics too much of a problem when I play these games even now.

Exactly.

I want a remake that will make me feel the way the original X-Com did when responding to a nighttime terror mission in early game vs Chrysalids.

Deus Ex, LoZ: OOC, Goldeneye/Perfect Dark, Diddy Kong Racing.

Deus Ex
Tiberian Dawn
Red Alert

This.
Plus Flashback: The Quest for Identity, Metal Gear Solid (for PC, heh) and Rollcage.

I hope Square-Enix continue with their near-verbatim Final Fantasy DS remake series and do Final Fantasy V and VI. Sure, they're not the best graphics of the day, but they're complex enough for a portable system and a good way of revisiting old classics that are a little ugly.

It would be cool if some of the best Platform games of yesteryear - the Super Marios and Sonic the Hedgehogs particularly - were done over (still in 2D) with 1080 worthy sprites and super-detailed backgrounds. The games would remain essentially identical, just with visuals that look like they came from an animated movie. I suppose the biggest problem with this is that Nintendo haven't put a high-def console out, but they're no strangers to endlessly porting their old properties, so I wouldn't put the whole idea above them.

Relic should use their recently reacquired rights and remake Homeworld to reintroduce the series and... well, to apologise for Homeworld 2 I suppose. Thing is, it's a game that doesn't look that bad anyway, and its one game that wouldn't suffer from a few additions here and there Reintroduce the other pirate race from their early story drafts (Starfish Motherships!) perhaps incorporate the awesome Megalith ideas that got dropped from Homeworld 2 when development got rushed through and you'd have one hell of remake, though one that isn't strictly 'verbatim'.

Ultima 7, Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall, Buck Rogers isometric RPGs from SSI, Carmageddon 1+addon, and plenty more.

Some more after reading the thread:

Dark Forces (joining in on the DF lovefest in this thread)
Goldeneye and Perfect Dark (perfect ports with upgraded graphics)
Star Fox 64

I would want the following to be remade:
Front mission 3
Alundra 1
Suikoden 1
Wild Arms 1
