What are some games that you never saw through to the end, but so desperately wanted to? Whether it be due to difficulty or crashes, post 'em here.

(Note this thread is not about games you were too lazy to finish)

For me, Heart of Darkness springs to mind immediately, I remember the save system being very merciless. I was on the last screen of the game at one stage and wiped out so many times, I just gave up, that was quite a while ago now though. Very fond memories all the same.

Black and White, the difficulty was very much my own fault, I sucked at raising my pet which lead to me reaching a point where I could really go no further because he was a ****ing dickwad, and things I did had so little affect on his personality at that point it seemed.

Also, Steel Battalion, ****ing permadeath has ****ed me over so many times in that game, you see if you die in that game, it deletes your save and you have to start over from the beginning, even if that means over 10 hours of gameplay gone.

Ninja Gaiden on original Xbox

All of my hate.

SNES games, many of them.

I also couldn't beat the final boss on Beyond Good and Evil.

Final Fantasy 9. I think I should have grinded or something. The last boss killed all my heroes with one hit.

Demons's Souls. Other games came out that took up my time. When I went back to play it I just got destroyed so fukthisshit etc

The Fantastic Dizzy - Just couldn't figure out where to use some of the stuff and there was no save function :( But I still replayed it quite a few times from the beginning, enjoyed exploring :)

Super Conflict - this game had a bug that wouldn't let you go any further after about scenario 6. It was a turn based strategy game with probably 60 scenarios. I don't think they ever released a fixed version because I tried several copies.

I've never heard anyone else complain about it, and I never understood that. The only documented bug I found:
Carrier

Floating airports that usually come prepacked with fighters and bombers. For
this reason they are pretty helpful. Besides that they carry medium power
multipurpose missiles that are okay against most ships and all air units. There
is a game bug when you order a carrier from a factory, so I wouldn't suggest
it! The game will crash when you try to check out the goodies inside the
carrier.
It's difficult to find information on this old game with a generic title.

Final Fantasy 8.

Oh wait sorry, games I wanted to finish. Haha. My mistake.

Seriously though, Chrono Trigger and Deus Ex. Two of my favourite games, but I've never been able to muster the patience to see them through. :(

Games that I wanted to finish? Well only one springs to mind.

Abe Exodus, got stuck and never finished it. Waited tried a few more times after that, but still didn't finish it. Original game, but it can sometimes be frustratingly difficult.

Other games that I've never finished wouldn't fit according to the OP, since it had nothing to do with difficulty, or crashes, I simply lost interest.

Oblivion. I got so fed up after about 2/3rds of the gates.

Diablo II

I got to act 4 and stopped. I didn't want it to end.

Many RPGs without a good story I never finished. I play RPGs just for the story, not the gameplay. Ex) Spiderweb Software's Exile series, Avernum series, Geneforge series.

Medal of Honor Allied Assault. Even though I racked up hundreds if not a 1000 hours in the MP I could never beat the SP. I got to the mission where you assaulted a German base and there were these alarms that kept going off and you had to turn them off. I could never find them all. Granted I was much younger back then and I could probably beat it now but I haven't been back since.

Grand Theft Auto 4, bought it during that Winter Steam sale for 5 dollars and played it for a grand total of two hours before I got fed up with the horrible performance and floaty cars.

Empire Total War, again another cheap Steam sale purchase, played this one for longer but only custom skirmishes in which I had tons of artillery against slow melee units, the campaign AI was awful. No Total War game since Rome has been able to hold my attention.

Bioshock. I was expecting a story-driven atmospheric adventure but, to my taste, it was too FPSish and too action oriented. Combat was frustrating and boring, so I quit without knowing how the story was going to end.

I remember playing system shock 2 most of the way through just to get stuck by a bugged door that leads to the alien environment stuff.

Stuntman because it continues to be the hardest game I've ever played. And to think I spent all of my birthday money on that piece.

Diablo 1. Lost the disc after getting a new computer.
Heart of Darkness is another one. Man that game was ****ing impossible.
I still haven't finished dead space. Might get around to it when I'm done with fallout new vegas.

I also haven't finished Oblivion yet, but I eventually will go for it.

I like the Oblivion gates. At first I found them boring, but then I realized the best loot in the game drops there, plus I clear a cave or two and a dungeon and some other quests in between closing gates so it doesn't get too bad. It would be terribly boring to do gate after gate.

I did finish Shivering Isles though.

Also Bioshock, DiRT, HL2: Episode 1, Gears of War, Race Driver, Resident Evil 4, GTR 2, etc. Pretty much all of my games. I'd like to finish them eventually.

The only games I own and finished were Doom and the Expansion... which might seem strange because they are the weakest games in my collection, but it just so happens that I haven't consistently had a good enough PC to play the later games well and now that I do, I haven't had time or the will.

Stuntman because it continues to be the hardest game I've ever played. And to think I spent all of my birthday money on that piece.

I too have never finished Stuntman. ****ing snowmobiles.

Hidden and Dangerous 2 ..game bug made it so that I couldnt continue without restarting a huge chunk of the game

Boiling Point: open world fps similiar to Just cause (without stunts) or Far Cry 2. buggy mess

Kameo, I'm actually on like the last level but have no urge to finish it. I also have a ton of other games I haven't finished but this one stands out the most. Also Demon's Souls but its because so many other games came out. I'm about halfway done with that game but I think I'm doing it wrong cuz I must have put like 20+ hrs into it all ready

past titles:

1) ground control 2- got a little into the alien campaign...where there's this super annoying mission where you have to collect some barrels before they get destroyed, but it's ****ing impossible. first off the enemy moves in on en mass with walkers and what not straight from the beginning....all your own forces are scattered all over the place but in so low numbers/tier they can't do shit, the units you can use to pickup barrels are shit and move like snails....in the end I just moved on to other games. I might try and go back to the game again but I have a feeling I will get stuck at the same mission.

2) homeworld - got to where you had to fight the 3rd race and their mothership or something(can't really remember) and if I remember correctly in homeworld you brought forces with you from previous missions...and well I guess I didn't bring enough. again I might go back to this at some point.

3) port royale 2- I dunno...it seems whenever I try and go to expand my fleet with a new ship(s) I always shortly after end up going bankrupt. I also hate how when there's multiple ships involved in sea battles, how the player is forced to use only a single ship at a time(even though he has more) vs. multiple AI ships. might go back to this...though I guess medieval total war 2 will probably get my attention instead.

4) Baldurs gate 2: throne of baal - got to some point I couldn't get past...also it was rather dull. unlikely I'll go back to this, though I might revisit the main game(loved that).

5) Guildwars- got to the ring of fire mission(I think that was what it was called) and kept being raped by those lightning obelisks and magma spiders....so I never got any further than that. will most likely finish this one up in preparation for GW2.

6) I'm actually not sure of this one...but I don't think I ever finished the tribunal expansion to morrowind. wether it was difficulty or simply getting sidetracked I can't remember...I do remember there were some odd progression with the mobs...back on mainland I would pwn mobs left and right with a flick of my wrist...then I would go to mournhold and those goblinhounds or whatever would be really difficult....funny enough I experienced pretty much the same shit with fallout 3 DLC(didn't really make sense that half naked tribals with clubs would be much harder to kill than super mutants with miniguns(though possibly this had to do with some custom mods messing things up))

current possible contenders:

Deadspace: I've gotten to a point where I'm getting kinda frustrated with the scenarios they put you in....multiple really tough enemies and the cumbersome combat system doesn't really help(why the hell isn't there a quick key or auto refill for that matter on oxygen and the nano(?) stuff!?) I will most likely at some point make it through this one when I can be bothered.

the void
: well I somehow managed to piss off one of the brothers and I have no clue how to beat him or if it's even possible with my current reserves of colour. I will probably try this one again at some point.

Fallout 3 - Got quite far and lost all my saves due to a system failure. Hot to reformat and lost all my progress.
The Witcher - Same reason as above, but I had played so much of the game I never went back to it.
Resident Evil 4 - Game went to shit after the villages. Hated the ****ing castle and gave up.
Transformers - War For Cybertron - Still have it installed, will probably finish it soon.

two that come to mind are final fantasy XII and dead space. as much as i loved FFXII, i just never got around to finishing it. the first playthrough i was using a rented copy which got me so far, then i borrowed it off a mate a few times and slogged through to the second disc but stopped. later on in life i bought a copy off ebay and got to relatively the same place and i've got a feeling i stopped because i switched from windows to a mac.

dead space i throughly enjoyed going through, i think i last got to the part just before you head down to planetside but around the release of dead space was also a crazy amount of other more time-consuming games, fallout 3 and far cry 2 come to mind, so i put it down. i've still got it and will hopefully pick it back up again nearer to the time when dead space 2 is released.

I'm amazed to see so many people mention Heart of Darkness! I thought I was the only person who's ever played that! I've never beaten it either. Last boss was a dick.

Most games I can finish, but I just get bored of them so don't...

oblivion (too boring)
dragon age (too long)
ninja gaiden (too hard)
spider-man shattered dimensions (srsly i gave up on that shit before the end of the first level SOOO BAD!)
splosion man (too frustrating)

Indigo Prophecy - At the first stealth chapter I was like 'oh well, just a few very fustrating tries and I'll be through it', and then I arrived at the second one... which made me like '**** THIS SHIT I DONT WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED THAT EVENING *smashes keyboard*'

Fallout 3 - corrupted my save game twice

World in Conflict - Had no idea what to do after the intro missions and gave up

Call of Duty MW2 - Couldn't beat the part where you have to defend some house in the woods. cheated my way through

Half-Life 2 Episode 2 - Kept dying at the final fight.

The very first Socom on PS2.

Game froze at the same spot on the very last level. :(
Favorite PS2 game right there.

It's pretty common for me to not finish a game because I get bored of the story or gameplay before it's over. I have pretty particular tastes.

Stuntman because it continues to be the hardest game I've ever played. And to think I spent all of my birthday money on that piece.

I too have never finished Stuntman. ****ing snowmobiles.

Chiming in on this one. I've had this game for more than half a decade at least and I still have never been able to beat it despite countless tries. It just gets absurdly difficult. I do love this game though.

The last movie scene (sports cars on the mountain side) was the hardest thing I have ever played. Took a week to finish that last movie, but I was very pleased when I did.

I'm amazed to see so many people mention Heart of Darkness! I thought I was the only person who's ever played that! I've never beaten it either. Last boss was a dick.

Most games I can finish, but I just get bored of them so don't...

I've played it too....and I beat it, you're all a bunch of n00bs!

Want to finish someday:
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (I got up to the sniper boss battle and just stopped. I love Metal Gear games, and the 3rd has elements that far exceed the earlier games... but getting back into any of them after even a month away is usually fatal to a playthrough).
Napoleon Total War (Only TW game I've ever played. I like it in theory, but I honestly haven't a clue what I'm doing. It's not like I lose in battles... I just don't understand what acceptable losses are, and the game doesn't really explain that stuff, so I don't get any further for fear of screwing up. Strange attitude I know).
Resident Evil 4 (Two chapters to go, I actually only put this down to play Civilization V. Honestly, it was getting a little frustrating - ****ING DIPSHIT ASHLEY - but I'll probably cap it off by the end of the year).
The Settlers II (Been hanging over me since childhood. I got to the last mission and just never worked out how to do it. Though up to then, you pretty much just rely on the terrible AI anyway).
Thief III (This list would have contained the first two games up until a year ago. I spend so long updating the textures that I never play the third game beyond the second mission before something new diverts my attention. Love the series though).

Meh:
Fallout 3 (After 20 to 40 hours of brown. I mostly did sidequests, so I'm actually rather early in the story. Just found it chronically uninteresting, a jack of all trades title with functional combat, dialogue, missions and everything in between. Also, what's with all the mutants and three-headed cows? I dig the whole 50s utopia goes dystopia stuff, but some of the creatures are just asking to be called 'zany', which just makes me shrug with every muscle in my body.).
Prey (The only thing notable about the game so far is how it forces you to kill someone with a wrench in a bar brawl. An average shooter that reminds us that 'Vanilla' gets a lot of bad rep despite being delicious).
Starcraft (Ok, this one is more my fault for leaving it so long. Had I played it when it was relevant, I wouldn't have been able to shut up about it.)
Super Mario 64 DS (Again, late to the party. I get this out whenever I head to my parents, do a few more stars and put it back. It's undeniably good, it's just not especially compelling any more. I'll take it down a notch though, because I waltzed through Super Mario World 1 and 2 in handheld variety years after their release with half the apathy).
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (Like Final Fantasy Tactics with just a little too much flatness in the job-systems. Also a massive experience grindfest. I only managed to get as far as I did by playing through an emulator and using frameskip and auto-battle AI to get my characters to fight each other. Still humming the battle tune in the shower.... grrrgh. Nonetheless, the 'Lawful / Neutral / Chaotic' alignment system (with branching storyline) is probably more competent than most of everything in the last decade and a half).
Vagrant Story (Been so many years that I'm going to have to restart. The story seemed fascinating, the gameplay was unique, if imperfect... but, truth is, this era of console game just doesn't excite me like it should.)

???:
Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl (I have installed this game three times. That's three more times than I've double clicked the executable. Maybe its the legendary bugs or the talk about playing it with mods to get the right experience, but I've just never sat in front of my computer and felt 'oh boy, I've got an entire, multi-hour game sitting on my hard-drive that I could play right now!')

Err... so now you know.
