Anyone else notice when you check the Half-Life 2 update at gamespot they seemed to have a attitude towards it?

Half-Life 2 Steam presale starts tomorrow

Half-Life 2 doesn't have a release date yet, but Valve will take your money anyway....

Think gamespots starting to get tired of the waiting game as much as some fans are...

Possibly, but alot of people on many of the message boards have been getting attitudes and such. My feelings....rock on VALVe and bring on HL2!

Yes, but you would expect them to have better things to do with their time, like playing THPS3, which is the most perfect game evahhhh!! (according to them).

well they reported the news as it is.
same as usual.

It's a stupid attitude. It's no different than pre-ordering a game that doesn't have a solid release date yet. Except you get part of the package (CS:S) to play right away.

It's also like buying a game and taking it home only you can't play it and you don't know when you'll be able to play it.

But you get to play CS with a bunch of dickheads, awesome.

There's hundreds of thousands of CS players out there , i'm sure there not allllllllllllll d*ckheads. :dork:

Wrong.

Valve is making unearned revenue, which gives them extra cash to do whatever they want.

With a typical pre-order, the cash stays at Gamestop, EB Games as unearned revenue at that specific store. Only when the game is released, that pre-order money finally makes its way to a game developer/publisher.

Valve is seriously milking way too much money out of Steam.

Because making Steam in the first place didn't cost any money at all!

It seems to me that Gamespot has always copped an attitude toward HL2.

If yah don't like it, don't buy it. Simple.

P.S. when you find a decent server with good people, its all good.

It cost money. You know VALVe do have to pay their programmers.

And from my guess, VALVe won't really dive into the cash funds str8 off. On second thought, if you cancel your pre-order and you've paid for it do you get a refund? ( i didn't pay for my preorder at my store like others did, so they just removed it)

To me its actually a small wonder that Steam still breathes at all given the amount of investment Valve has to keep dumping into it to pay for man hours, payroll, support, equipment, marketing, bandwidth etc.

The cost of the amount of bandwidth they are consuming has to be astronomical.

All these factors as well as a bunch of others I didn't mention are something Valve has to continuely invest in on a monthly basis. They are not anywhere near profit on Steam yet. It would be a small miracle if they were to even break even with Steam sales when HL 2 actually comes out.

I am fairly certain they are running in the red right now trying to keep steam alive. But, they are still a strong company with a healthy bank account and they believe in what they are doing so for right now, they still feel it is in all of our best intrests to keep pushing Steam.

I for one am not surprised at the prices we have for the packages. Keep rockin Valve. Here's to hoping you make it all work in the end

Edit: spelling fix...

I've noticed this myself actually. Ever since the Sept. 30th delay, Gamespot have always been snide bastards when reporting anything Half-Life 2 related. They're only serving to make themselves look petty and unprofessional though.

WHOA WHOA WHOA!! How do you figure it didn't cost any money to make Steam???!!! Where do you think the servers came from to run Steam???!!! You think the technology for Steam and everything else that goes into it had already existed and that they just had a to write a few lines of code and they were done? Please think before you type out things on a forum.

He needs to add some sarcasim tags then :p are atleast a

Well, I'm probably going to go ahead and buy HL2 over Steam and play CS:S to hold me over. The only draw back that I have of "Valve taking my money" is that HL2 still doesn't even have a release date. I know this sounds n00bish but really, I'd rather have at least Valve saying "HL2 will be released this year for sure". And no, I wouldn't fully trust them anyways.

Same here! :)

what "unearned" revenue? did you fund HL2? VUG didn't..
I know I didn't..but I WILL help fund HL3 by purchasing through steam..don't care about the wait anymore,VALVe deserves my cash for the work they have done and the entertainment they have given me over the last 6+ years..

Just my opinion of course

They kept pouring money into it because they knew how much they'd capitalize cutting out middlemen once the fully functional steam/hl2 release became a reality.
