I recently download cFos traffic shaper and it's bloody excellent. An explanation of what it does (I've no idea how popular this kind of software is, so I don't know how savvy everyone is with it)

As long as you limit the upload/download speed to leave some bandwidth for gaming, I've found I can get a ping of ~20 while download at 80kb/s on a 1meg connection. It's great for torrents as well- as you can use all of your upload speed without worrying about slowing down the download through clogging.

Does anyone else use traffic shaping? Is there any other software that does it for free? I have to pay for my version after 30 days...

i can get 30 ping while dling on a 1.5 connection around 100kb without this program so theres no reason to use it

Just get a program like Bit comet where you can limit the upload and download speeds of your torrents. No need to pay for stuff like that.

I just tried downloading and gaming a few days ago. I was downloading at 500kbps while CSS'ing at a steady 50 ping. I was amased. Charter 3MB cable.

I have uTorrent, which lets you limit both like you say, but my ping still gets hit up to 500 anything over 10k/s on the upstream, which cripples torrent downloads. But fair enough if your connection can cope, I wish I could upgrade.... our line can only handle 1meg, even tho' we're entitled to 2 :(
