Dungeons & Dragons Co-Creator Dies at 69

Gary Gygax, who co-created the fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons and helped start the role-playing phenomenon, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva. He was 69.

He had been suffering from health problems for several years, including an abdominal aneurysm, said his wife, Gail Gygax.

Gygax and Dave Arneson developed Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game known for its oddly shaped dice became a hit, particularly among teenage boys, and eventually was turned into video games, books and movies.

;(

Saving throw failed...

It's amazing how much we, as gamers, owe to this man. He is really the godfather of modern roleplaying, digital and non. No matter what type of gamer you are , Gary's influence can be seen across the spectrum.

Also, years behind on that joke, THC. You just had to add the obligatory saving throw joke didn't ya.

You know what's even more amazing, all these people who have never heard of him and only pay their respects to him after he's dead like half of all the registered users on GameSpot, it's annoying..

Anyway, it's a shame he's gone, he's done a great deal for PnP RPGs, and gaming in general.

I do not have that much experience with the PnP version fo DND though, most of my PnP days are spent with Twilight 2000.

I'LL MISS HIM SOOOO MUCH!...

Who was he again?

Sarcasm...

I played for a while in the 80's. Great creative fun. Still have the basic / advanced box kits, books, campaigns, etc. somewhere.

I read about this earlier elsewhere but I thought it was just jokes. Damn. Nerds everywhere collectively mourn. He walks the higher planes now.

He's now a wight.

Rest in peace. Well, at least when a paladin or cleric comes around and vanquishes you. Until then, let the unholy murdering begin!

I would like the world to remember me as the guy who really enjoyed playing games and sharing his knowledge and his fun pastimes with everybody else.

And so you shall be.
