Ok...I'm not sure if I should be worried, but gas prices near me (in NY) have been increasing like crazy lately. I mean it increased 12 cents in the timespan of 1 hour earlier today! Premium grade gas is over 3.25 a gallon here. Regular is like 3.05 a gallon. Just a month and a half ago we had gas prices at 2.27 a gallon. And now it's almost up a whole dollar from that small amount of time. This is absolutly absurd, I have already given up car searching because of the gas prices going through the roof, not to mention insurance is already skyrocketing as it is.

Time to get the bicycle out.

I know what you mean. Here, it's steadily been rising, with regular at around $2.80. It also sucks that my car has shitty mileage. Once summer comes, I won't be driving as much when school is out.

Holy shit!

Where's your oil NOW America?! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Land of the inflation, more like.

Gas prices are about the same in Canada at the moment...a little lower, but relatively the same..depends on where you are.

Yeah...I never thought it'd take over 30 bucks to fill up my civic.

This is why public transportation/actually WALKING = the shit.
Well, those of us in the south are screwed for this.

-Public transportation down here positively blows. Takes forever to get anywhere, you have to wait for buses for at least 45 minutes.
-If you want to walk anywhere, good luck. Chances are it's a couple miles away, and even if it's not, it's so god damned hot that you'll be dripping with sweat by the time you get there. I'm sure the folks at work will love that.

QFT!

almost 3 bucks here...dont know if walking 15-20 miles to get to school is better than wasting gas D;

It has become a summer tradition to complain about gas prices.

Upgrade your car so it consumes less fuel. That's my plan. 17 mpg isn't going to cu tit.

This thread makes me laugh.

Just wait until you're paying £1 a litre for fuel like we are over here.

Yes thats right. £1 a litre. There are 3.785 litres to a US gallon. So thats £3.79 per US gallon. Which at today's prices, is $6.75 a gallon.

So basically, when you're paying as much as we do, then you can complain :(

But your public transportation is far better than ours. We're far more dependent on cars.

Not only that, there are far more green-friendly mileage-pounding deisels across the Atlantic than here in the states.
$6 a gallon sucks, but I pay maybe $60 a month which is high considering I drive maybe 600 miles a month.

Not joking with the sequenced multiples of 6 numbers either.

You'd think so wouldn't you? But in reality, public transport in the UK is appauling.

For most people, its actually more expensive to use public transport than private transport.

Taxes in the UK are so high not for any environmental reasons, or any philanthropic reasons to aid public transport. Taxes are high because we need our cars, and because the government knows that the people in the UK are too lazy to actually complain about it. We did have some protests a few years back, but fuel prices are actually higher now than when they were at the time of the protests (it was the prices and licence fees that were the trigger).

What? I didn't know the US had different gallon systems. In that case I wasn't being ironical.

And you Americans - Why are your cars doing 17mpg? Average new small car (hatchback) does about 70 to the gallon. And the UK is FAR smaller.

Is there anything I can do to my POS '98 Cavalier to make it more fuel efficient?

We don't have much of a choice of subcompact cars around here. Maybe I should just buy a Geo Metro

I know someone with a big diesel truck and he payed over 72 dollars just to fill up his tank. :|

Seeing as I put the 17mpg figure out there, I'll answer. My car is Japanese and 14 years old and very much not a hatchback.

US and imperial gallons are different.

Haha, yeah right. Stop whining, we have it worse than you guys. And we'll stop whining when someone has it worse than us.

I was happy with my gas mileage before. It was ~30mpg for freeway driving and mid-upper 20's for local driving.

Then I got my oil changed. The guy there added some kind of super-magical-happy oil or something.

I recently drove from school to home and then did some other local driving there. I GOT 38 MPG. Absolutely amazing for my car. Then, I only burned 1/2 a tank on the way back up on a 4.5 hour drive that I did a week ago now and I still haven't had to fill up again.

There's some story around Virginia that they need to empty out all the tanks before they clean them, and fill them with a new ethanol blend, thus explaining both high prices and the fact that most gas stations are low/empty on fuel. It sounds suspiciously like some kind of story to avoid gas rushes to me.

That's because it's got duty, then they tax you like 500% on top of your duty (so they're taxing you for being taxed, essentially). :frown:

Public transport in Cardiff is ok..well buses are. Prices are extortionate, but they come on time most of the time, and they do the job!

The ting with the UK is the different councils run the buses and different companies run the trains in different areas. So an overall UK analysis of transport system is difficult

But yeah, petrol costs too much

Yeah but public transport's worth should be based on price to service quality ratio.

For £8 a week more, I can take my car instead of the bus, and I can get up 30 minutes earlier, go home for my tea quickly, and still goto the cinema in the evening (for example). Now that's what I call value for money. Prices are going up yes, but I'm pretty sure public tranport's cost will go up more than fuel prices ( :frown: )

:(

$30 for a full tank in the US and the complaints are rolling  it equates to $70 - $80 here, it's nearly £60 to fill up your tank, in and around Birmingham anyway.

$30 my ass, my mom's mini van EASILY passes $40 when filling up, $3 for 87 IS rediculious, I don't care what you have to say, or what you have to pay.
