'Gatorade' could save kids from diarrhea death

Too much credit to Gatorade. It's just a salt and sugar electrolyte solution. Add in some potassium and the other required electrolytes and there you go.

We in America are lucky we can replenish our electrolytes so easily... considering all the diarrhea our food causes. We're probably locked in the bathroom due to diarrhea more than any other nation on earth. We just have the means to get over it.

but it's got what kids crave... it's got electrolytes.

diarrhea, which is the number two killer of children
He said NUMBER TWO killer.

also, this isn't Gatorade, I just truncated the title. It's 'poor man's Gatorade', i.e. Ghetto recipe: home-made with sugar, salt, and water.

Doubtful. We actually have clean water to drink.

Well, it wasn't entirely serious, but our food sure does give us the shits. That is, our unhealthy food. Our water is clean, that is true, but dirty water isn't what gives us our diarrhea. I stopped eating the canned foods, the frozen meals, the fast foods, the processed foods... and my diarrhea went away. It just took a little bit of time.

A water main broke around here and the governor issued a boil water order which affected about 20 towns. Apparently the reserve water was untreated which basically means homeless men and birds were shitting in it. I happened to have a nice tall glass of ice water the day of the break before hearing the news...awesome.

At least it wasn't a short glass.

How do you die from diarrhea?

Diarrhea deprives the body of electrolytes and water. Water being something people in those parts of the world have enough trouble getting in the first place. Clean water anyway... not water that just causes more diarrhea.

How do you die from diarrhea?

dehydration

It is a common cause of death in developing countries and the second most common cause of infant deaths worldwide. The loss of fluids through diarrhea can cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. In 2009 diarrhea was estimated to have caused 1.1 million deaths in people aged 5 and over[4] and 1.5 million deaths in children under the age of 5

Sometimes when I have diarrhea I thnk I am gonna die. It is cool losing all that water weight though... you feel like someone cleaned you out with a pressure washer when you're better.

Yeah man, diarrhea sucks. But I didn't really ever feel good after it was all done.

The thing is, when I had diarrhea, I knew it was horrible and I felt like I'm going to die sometimes, but I knew I was going to get better, and it'd be overwith after a few bouts. But with these kids, it's not like that... they usually die after weeks of it. Terrible.

Diarrhea is actually an extremely serious disease in the third world. It kills more children annually than most other diseases. The problem is that water sources are contaminated with protozoans, and diarrhea from the protozoans causes severe dehydration. The children with the disease can't rehydrate because the water is already contaminated in the first place. They eventually die from lack of clean water.

Diarrhea isn't a disease it's a symptom.

It's interesting to note that cystic fibrosis is suspected to have been maintained in some populations due to heterozygotic advantage for being a carrier - it helps resist having the diarrhea that cholera causes. It really is that serious a killer that carrying a recessive genetic disease can be selected for within a population.
