If you belong to any of these sites, be sure to change your password ASAP.

This weekend we discovered that Gawker Media's servers were compromised, resulting in a security breach at Lifehacker, Gizmodo, Gawker, Jezebel, io9, Jalopnik, Kotaku, Deadspin, and Fleshbot. If you're a commenter on any of our sites, you probably have several questions.

We understand how important trust is on the internet, and we're deeply sorry for and embarrassed about this breach of security—and of trust. We're working around the clock to ensure our security (and our commenters' account security) moving forward. We're also committed to communicating openly and frequently with you to make sure you understand what has happened, how it may or may not affect you, and and what we're doing to fix things.

What could they even do with your account? **** with your subscriptions or something? Post rude comments?

Vegeta, think of what could be done to your INTERNET REPUTATION.

this is weird. I was just going to make a Gizmodo account too. I guess I'll be sticking to Engadget for now :D

If you use the same password for your online bank account or email address they could seriously **** you up.

[Vegeta will then reply with "But who is stupid enough to use the same password for everything?"]
And the answer is a hell of a lot of people. I only recently changed all my passwords (I used to have three, not I have lots).

I once comented using facebook, those dont count?

Those sites are all from the same company?

No, my reply is "then why is Krynn saying to only change your password on these sites?"

Unless he actually meant change your password for everything. (what a pain that'd be)

But yes, you would be stupid if you used the exact same password that you use on some stupid news site that you do on important sites like your email, or paypal, or steam.

I don't get the confusion. Am I wrong in thinking you wouldn't want people to access your accounts on those various sites? I mean, they could change the email address and everything, forever stealing your account. It may not be life threatening, but surely its not something desirable?

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't saying that this wasn't worthy of notice, it just seemed kind of silly to me.

And I really doubt your one account out of millions is in danger. Unless they had like a bot to change everyone's email address to something. But I bet that could be undone by the db geeks.

I think the biggest issue is that there is now going to be tons of spam bot accounts from those who don't change their passwords, which could lead to a deletion of your account. Still not a huge deal, since if you are a regular member you would see this notice and have changed it promptly, but still, annoying. But I'm pretty sure that several people (like on kotaku) have accounts with their actual names and that are linked to their real life identity, like game developers and such, which could cause problems if someone got access to.

Actually I think the biggest issue is **** Gawker Media and everything they stand for.
