After a while of thinking I was buying a 7800 GTX, I was talked out of it and told to buy a cheaper GT 256MB 16X PCI.

Can someone tell me first, why if its just as good as a 7800gtx, is it less money....and secondly, how well does it do with BF2 on high settings....

No.. the GTX is far better.
And my 6800GT runs BF2 on high settings.. lol

The 7900gt is basically the equavilant of a 7800gtx. It costs less becuase its done under the 90nm process and that apparently lowers costs. And so long as you have 2GB of RAM, you should be able to max out BF2 settings with 4xAA and 16xAF at 1280x1024.

I run it all maxed at those settings for the exception of the "textrues" which have to be set to meduim becuase I only have 1GB of RAM.

i got 2 gigs so i should be more than fine, thanks

Dumb Dude you could easily put the textures on high. I only have one gig of ram and I run it like that...

I have tried running max textures and I get real bad stutter. The stutter only lasts until I physically see every part of the map, so if the next round is in the same map, I won't stutter.

But I leave it on meduim because its real bad stutter that I can't be bothered to play with. Oh well....It also doesn't help that I ordered really expensive RAM and buying another GB would cost me $190.

As my name says, I'm quite the dumb!

I run my textures on medium too (1GB RAM), on high the stutter is terrible.

But wouldn't VRAM have more to do with textures than system RAM?

If you had a 512mb video card would you be able to use high textures easily with only a gig of system ram? I shink sho...

Well, my buddy plays BF2 with everything maxed and he has an x850xtpe, which only has 256mb and he gets no stutter (also has 1GB of ram).

Its an odd problem indeed and it sucks I can't max it, but oh well. I mean, its not like spent $620 on a video card for nothing, right...right? :(

whoever talked u into getting a 7900gt instead of a 7800gtx is smart. 7900gt is the same as the 7800gtx and its also newer, uses less power and where i live (australia) i can get 2 7900gts for the price of a 7800gtx, although 7800gtx prices are coming they wont come down to the cheaper and better 7900gt
