Well, I ctually bothered reading up on Race X, now, it says that the Gene Worm takes in resources, and reformats them for Race X needs, well, it also resembles the Tentacle. The tentacle, to my knowledge, is Xenian, but it seems to be related to the Gene Worm, which teleports in Shock Toopers. . . so you have a weird sort of chain here, the Shock Troopers seem to be using the Gene Worm, but it seems allied to them, the Gene Worm seems closely related to the Tentacle, so maybe, Race X is another race of Xenians? I mean, true, they differ (greatly so) from conventional Xenians, but most of them seem related (Shock Trooper-Vortigaunt, Houndeye-Voltigore, Gene Worm-Tentacle). Maybe Gearbox was just trying to mimic Valve's ingenius creations, but if you think of it from a canon point of view (which, for some, would totally remove Gearbox from the scene) that might explain the Race X? Maybe they aren't combine related at all, and more Xen related, but like an opposing nation or something. Speculation, Discussion, Ignore this because it's Gear Box?

Evidence says that Race-X were Xen-resident creatures. The science team were studying baby Race-X specimens. As for the similarities between the tentacle and the gene worm...I don't really know. They do look similar, but I doubt they have more than a distant ancestry.

Since when did Voltigores start looking like Houndeyes?
They look more like Antlion guards to me...:|

It was something rather. . . OH, yes, the stripes, and energy manipulation etc.

What I was getting at (and forgot to mention) is that;
1) Race X cannot be combine related, as they seem to have their own plans (terraforming with the Geneworm, kidnapping scientists) although those goals sem SIMILAR to Combine intentions, their technology and configuration are way too different, even with a 20 year advancement period.

2) The whole chain thing would suggest to me that Race X is atleat in SOME sort of fight with 'normal' or 'original' Xenians. And when you thing about it, excluding the 'spore grenade spitting' and the two arms instead of one, a Shock Trooper resembles a Vortigaunt with armor =\. I mean, sure there are differences, eye-color, feet, etc. But I'd have an easier time believing that Adrian's caught up in a war between Race X and the Vorts, than early forms of the Combine =\.

3) The Xenians seem to just be runnig blindly to Earth, while the Shock Troopers (Race X in general, seems like a huge collage of different aliens jumbled up together) seem to have some sort of plan, like maybe they were EXPECTING to invade Earth Oo. I mean, they were already trying to morph the place with the Gene Worm, and were kidnapping scientists for one reason or another. Could it be said, that Race X were the ones chasing Nihilanth and the Vorts, while the Combine just stumbed into everything in a search for portal technology?
^I think some one cleared that last bit, that the Nihilanth WAS INDEED running from the Combine, but it's a possibility Oo^

I know, my theory's a little 'out there' but it made sense to me a couple days ago.

. . . you guys are right Oo
But I don't think they could have evolved or been related, Antlion Guards don't control energy =P

But you guys might be on to something.

No, no we're not. Now get that thought out of your head before they come for you.

Yes...pleasent and constructive thought are bad for the mind.

............................................................

No, you guys are right. Questiong Valve canon is pointless. It's even unethical to question the origins of anon-existent alien race by curiousity, I should just play the game without any thought =|.

O.F. Shock Troopers are cooler than HL 1 Vortigaunts. Yeah, I said it.

You got to wonder why a guy with a PhD would even dare put his fingers near the mouth of an alien creature.

You'd wonder why he'd jump above a giagantic fan in order to propell himself into a vent 100 feet in the air too (Blast Pit). It took me ages to figure that bit out. Jumping into the fan was just too stupid to occur to me. I only found it out because I was really, really bored and started throwing grenades everywhere and noticed that they floated up when I threw them over the fan.

Sounds like somethign I'd do =|

I remember, at one point, I got bored, and just shot something to hell out of frustration, and it got me by, and I realized, I HAD to do that.

It also took me forever to solve the laser puzzle in Questionable Ethics, pushing the box under the laser cover and so on. . . lol, good times. . .

Why is it that ALL of MY threads end up off topic?

BTW, Shock Troopers>Vorts
I just like the way they look more, it's the only thing I can 'thank' Gear Box for. . . and Adrian Shephard >.>

All threads on HL2.net end up off-topic. That's the nature of conversation; it tends to drift if you're not very focused on the subject at hand, like if there's an argument going on.

Also, Omega, your signature is far too long. 4 lines (or the equivalent) of standard forum font max.

And shock troopers suck. They're uninteresting and have fairly standard weapons when you get past their alien appearance.

Standard weapons are fine, I don't care about that, but the way they look? Uninteresting'. . . right =|

I prefer combine overwatch over both to be honest.

Seconded!

I just like the Shock Troopers better than Vorts.

Combine(Synths, Citidael, etc)>Overwatch>Shock Troopers>Vorts>Houndeyes =D

I did the same thing. But it still looks weird, because the fan didn't move "oh so effin sup3r 1337 fast, and 1 will fly to t3h ceiling" fast.
In fact it was really slow...

And i loved, how the scientist and the barney blew themselves up with the gauss gun.

A lot of things in HL (1 atleast) are really illlogical, just to spice up the gamepley. But they actually WANTED to sacrifice realism to get fun gameplay, which was a dang fine thing to do.

My idea of alien hierarchy:
Lamarr>combine forces(non-human)>Overwatch>Vortigaunt>Shock Trooper>zombie>pit drone>SNARK!

I prefer combine overwatch over both to be honest.

Combine soldiers FTW.

The Vortigaunts look a bit pathetic (perhaps intended) and the Shock Troopers weren't spectacular-looking to me.

Combine soldiers FTW.

That's like saying "Completely ordinary human soldiers for the winz, bcuz they are t3h cooler then aliens!".

They look like humans (mechanical parts don't count), act like humans and talk like humans.
The only thing that makes them trans-human are the modifications done to them and the occasional brainwashing they get. Other then that, they are completely normal.

What's wrong with that? I tend to like the standard issue soldier than t3h l33t ub3r sn1pz0r or t3h n00kz.

I know. And it's their normal-ness that is so cool. Anybody can dream up big scary aliens with mucus dripping from their bodies with big pointy teeth.

Combine soldiers get the job done in a much more subliminal and less-overdone way. Here is the epitome of the Combine's doings: taking normal humans and performing dehumanising modifications on their bodies and mind, so that they are now more machine than human.

More compelling than just another alien with the big pointy teeth.

Yeah

That's what caught my attention with Half-Life 2, is that there were no aliens, and you're like 'WTF', you go to find out more, and you stumble across the most awesome game in history =P

Lol
The thing that REALLY caught my eye, was a trailer for either EP1 or Lost Coast, with the 'auto-reloading blue gun' (eventually, I learned it was called a pulse rifle)

What caught my eye was the fact that it was half life.

Lol
I didn't even notice it was.

I had walked in on an episode of 'Cinematech' and I sat down, then at the end, it did that fade thing with 'Half-Life 2'. And I was stoked.
