Hi Guys

Do any of you know any good geopolitical strategy games played online ? I can't seem to find any.

I'd recommend Cybernations, a bunch of HL2.netters played it for awhile.

I tried getting back into it recently and just can't.

According to rumours and hints from the betatesters, it will be out in an online downloadable form on the 23rd, or atleast sometime during next week, so keep an eye on the official website.

I wouldn't really call the SR games for 'political', because they are FAR more oriented towards war than diplomacy..

When it gets published in the US it will probably be 40 USD, look for it in the US under the name of "Commander-In-Chief".

Because of your americans goddamn influence, we pay more for games than you do, for example an Alone In The Dark for the XBOX 360 in the US = 50 USD, in Europe = 93 USD(60 EURO).

Game looks incredibly in-depth, weather systems on maps and all.
I'll definitely check it out, hopefully they release a demo.

I doubt it, the French version(Which is 1.20 fyi, English version got most of their attention and is 1.30) didn't get one.

But there are always.. less legal ways to get your hands on games, but I bought it, besides the devs are very dedicated to their game and plan on releasing alot of updates etc not just like patches I mean but you know, adding more game data or adding new scenarios etc to the game.

You misunderstand currency exchange. Yes your games cost more in USD but you also get paid more in USD which makes up for it.

But I'm not working, so I don't get a salary, I'm a student.

You misunderstand the principle.

You can't say, 'You Americans have it easy, your stuff costs half as much over here'. Becuase to them, it is just as expensive as they get paid in dollars. If you were in America (ignoring all the other things that would change) your buying power would be the same.

Dude I understand the principle I was just being an ass.

It's just the same way as it is in London, everything seems more expensive in London than in other UK cities, but the people who LIVE in London also have higher salaries which means percentage wise they don't have to 'spend' more 'percentage' of their salary on for example food than any other britts do.

What a waste of 60 bucks. The game is very boring, and is riddled with bugs and has a terrible frame-rate.

I suppose it could grow on me.

Yeah the framerate is an issue, but I only get it when I zoom in tot he level where everything switches to 3D models etc, aslong as I stick with 2D symbols I have no issues at all.

40 Euros? That is quite a bit. Most games in the UK don't cost that amount. Hmm, will have to think it over. SR 2020 didn't impress me. 2010 was much better, the UI was so much better.

So how is this game then?

It's a good game gameplay wise IMO, closest simulation of democracies I've ever seen in a computergame, however, there are still some stability bugs that need to be fixed, relating mostly to graphics memory, if anyone buys the game, put the graphics on LOW, there's barely a noticable difference in quality yet I got a -30- FPS increase when I put on Low, and I haven't had a CTD ever since..

Anyway more deeper, I think the game is quite fun, my first round I played as the President of North Korea, but I was kicked out after 3 months by the military because I tried to democratize the nation (too fast.. I guess).

Then I played as SK, managed to bribe a few MPs(Members of Parliament) and coerce some others into voting for my proposal of increasing freedom for teachers(which they were strangely afraid of, both the leftists and the rightists), then suddenly, BAM, North Korean military incursion on my territory, a north korean tank entered, went like 20 km into my territory, then left, I filed a request with the UN for a military intervention against NK, it was granted, all was going well, I had nearly taken over all of NK, then BAM China enters the fray on NKs side, then BAM USA and Japan entered the fray on my side, the war is still raging(Has been for over 2 months ingame now), but so far no nuclear weapons have been used(Thank God), I'm at 100% popularity though, the people seem very happy that I finally decided to deal with the North Korean scum.

Wow, sounds impressive. I brought it last night. So will that game get updates and content?

Yup, comparing just for example the french versions of 1.00 to 1.20 the difference is huge in bugfixes etc, although to be fair, it took the game 9 months to get the 1.20 patch, but I believe EVERSIM will support us customers etc, this is their first big game as a company(It's very popular in france where it first came out), and I don't think they want to ruin their reputation.

It's also coming out in retail stores across US in a few weeks under the title of Commander In Chief, published by IGS.

Also, lawls, The US(AI) just invaded Cuba(AI), then the UN did a resolution that gave the world right for military intervention against the US(!!), I know it's not very realistic but it still made me LOL hard! Sadly no counry so far has had the guts to do it and my South Korea is far to febble to mess with the big US of A.

Sooo, when it does get published here, it'd be like $25.... :D

I wanna play I wanna play I wanna play! arhghghghg

:P

Sounds awesome. Although if a North Korean tank entered 20kms into our territory in reality, it would have had to go through traffic. :p

A few things that bug me are, firstly the resolution seems to be set in stone at 1024*764. Don't like it. The map is a bit crap compared to SR2020 though graphics are similar. UI could be a bit nicer and more organised. But I want it to be realistic in terms of people and leaders etc.

I played as switzerland for a few hours, and I founded 15 new universities, which pushed up my ratings to about 75 percent, but I then had a huge budget deficit, so I tried to raise taxes across the board. I was rejected in parliament in every case, and then the ultra-nationalist party started coming out of the woodwork, and got the army on their side. I chastised the nationalists and the army, and then cut military budgets by 50 percent.

Then tanks started appearing all over the map out of my control, and a military coup started.

Nabobalis, if you mean GPS, then I've emailed the devs asking if there are any cheats, also for an active forum, go here, http://geopoliticalsimulator.freeforums.org/index.php

Stay away from the user called "MIG" though, he's a right-wing EXTREMISTS who's so heavily indoctrinated in his beliefs it's scary.. Seriously, he makes Bush look like a bloody SOCIALIST by comparison..

I have one tip for popularity also, when you start the game, go to the Secret Service and choose investigate people, but don't INVESTIGATE people, just use the menu to browse various personalities, click on their image so a second window pops up where you can schedule MEETINGS with them, then do so, then try to recruit them to your party, this works very well for 1. regional presidents/governors etc, 2. Sportspersons 3. Artists etc.

Yeah got that site bookmarked. Don't know if I will register tho. Cheats would help, but the fact that I have to control every little aspect is a bit of a bother to be frank.

They need an official forum. One where the devs can talk to gamers. I hope they do roll updates now by the truckload, don't want to be ripped off.

Game crashes abit and does seem to not response when I do a few things. This and SR2020 both have disappointed me. I hope a major developer can do a game like this and not **** it up.

I agree, what GPS needs is a Minister system like SR2020, where they actually do things, and you can give them priorities, like the head of finance, tell him to "Lower inflation, balance budget".

Both games need to make a love child really. That would be a good game, just need to have someone come up with good AI.

Why can't anyone get this genre of games right?

Hmm, GPS is actually really accurate.

I decided to play as Nigeria in an attempt to "clean up" the country.

First, some background on Nigeria that I learned in my political science class. The state receives most of its revenue from taxes on oil, and has hardly any income tax or sales tax. However, the state has very few expenditures. Most of the oil revenue goes towards lining the pockets of corrupt government leaders, and the government itself merely acts as a police force. Nigeria is also a government divided by tribe and religion. In the south, English-speaking Christians carry on in a western-style government put in place by Britain. In the North, mixed-language Muslims live under strict Shari'ah law with regulation of the press and other religions.

All of this was accurately modeled by GPS. All of my advisers were corrupt and almost everyone was willing to accept a position from me or speak highly of me with the slightest bribe. The government had HUGE surpluses, and it appeared that all of this money was going towards absolutely nothing. The government had one or fewer stars of budgeting on EVERY category except "personal protection of the president". Media and religion were not free, since there is constitutional islamic law in the north.

The first thing I did was fire my corrupt advisers and hire respected scientists and economists in those fields. This made my ratings go down to about 30 percent, but it didn't really hurt me much. The next thing I did was raise taxes on oil slightly, and then increase the budget across the board on almost everything, especially in aids. I still had a slight budget surplus after doing this, and my approval rating rose to 61 percent. I then bribed local religious and political figures to speak highly of me in public, and attended public events, making my approval rating rise to about 65 percent.

Then, I began the process of social reform. I put a term limit on the president, increased the frequency of elections, established free speech, and the separation of church and state in the north.

Free speech and free religion made people VERY happy all over the world, and my approval rating shot up to *90* percent. However, it made my rightist party extremely angry with me, and they demanded that I be removed from office. A military coup began, and I bribed military leaders and raised military budgets to stop it. After I removed shari'ah law in the north, my approval rating fell all the way down to 50 percent, and an uprising, followed by a civil war, occured.

I re-established Shariah law, and everything went back to normal.

Epic.
I must get this game.
How much is it? $60?
Wow.

Someone play Political Machine'08 with me.. :P
