Get DirectX 10 NOW

1.)Vista is unoptimized and running a lot of debugging tools in the background
2.)All graphic drivers for Vista are in a very very early stage.
3.)HL2 DOES NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF DX10. IT DOES NOT HAVE A DX10 RENDERER. THERE ARE NO DX10 CARDS OUT EITHER!
Basically right now no game takes advantage of DX10. Not a single game released. There are no Dx10 capable cards on the market either. Therefor Dx10 will have no real effect on performance for HL2 as HL2 makes no Dx10 calls. Vista has full support for Dx9 and DX10. It's just that Dx10 does not support Dx9. This means Developers will have to code on renderer for Dx9 and another for Dx10. A DX10 SDK exists and Nvidia and ATI can give beta cards to allow developers test there Dx10 games.

In other words: On a consumer level DirectX 10 means nothing until these conditions are met:
-A game comes out utilizing Dx10
-A graphics card comes out with support for DX10
-The consumer has Vista

Both ATI and Nvidia's next graphic cards will be Dx10.

it makes HL2 run better

Roflmao, no it doesn't. HL2 is a DX9 game, Vista emulates lower than DX10. But keep thinking what you want, you are WRONG.

Ep 1 crashed on Vista ;(

Back to XP until that's fixed.
did you get the video card driver for vista

i have the radeon driver for vista and it works way better than it did with xp

there aren't any games that can use it anyway. theres no point to this.

So where can I download DirectX10 without download Windows Vista?

thats the truth my friend.

Direct3D10 finally completes the break from the legacy fixed-function pipeline. Developers will use the programmable pipeline to emulate the older, fixed-function steps. Additionally, Microsoft had to rethink its display driver model now that the entire desktop is going 3D. The video card isn't just for games anymore. When you have a 3D desktop and give each application its own 3D window, the display driver has to be flexible and stable enough to handle the video card's increased role in the system. Microsoft split up the display driver to increase stability, to ensure that the 3D desktop stays up in the event that a game or another application crashes due to a graphics error. This change also means that Microsoft will not release DirectX 10 for Windows XP, because many of the Direct3D10 improvements will need the new Windows Vista Display Driver Model.

Dx10 is most likely coded down deep into Vista.

Also to redo it for Xp:
-They would have to make it work somehow alongside Dx9.

-Drivers for Dx10 have to be completely different than Dx9 because Dx10 does a major change on how it interacts with drivers. Thus they need to design two sets of drivers that run on Xp without interfering with eachother. This could cause major problems for ATI and Nvidia.

-They would most likely have to change a lot of Xp's basic functions in order to get Dx10 to work properly and have Dx9 work properly. Dx10 is a MAJOR change in architecture than Dx9.

-Dx10 does not support Dx9 calls or lower.

Yes, DirectX is now a lot more tight into Vista, and so now you NEED Vista to have DX10.

There is no upgrade really right now with this... It does do emulation which may/may not help performance.

If you run a DX10 app, you wlil run in the software rasterizer, which is slow...

Don't get Vista just cause you can say you have DX10.

No a DX10 app will not work if you do not have Dx10 it is as simple as that.

Vista does not emulate Dx9 either. It has full support for Dx9 and Dx10.

Yes it only works on Vista, just like Halo 2 pc will only work on Vista.... honestly, there is no reason to buy windows vista, except for the fact that they are making you buy it to use things that could be easily handled on any other windows and non windows operating system -_-. God I hate microsoft. If only linux had better support for games, that would be all that I would use. I love how they say Vista takes advantage of high end video cards with its 3d desktop and incredible media center... the 3d desktop that linux has been perfectly capable of doing on a low end graphics card for years? And the media center that is copied from machintosh? Rofl

omg Microsoft dosn't release an OS in 6 years and people get mad that there releasing a new one instead of just updating XP!!
omg!!
im now mad at valve for not just upgrading HL1 to HL2 for free.. ahhh!!!

Last time I checked, the Mac media centre was a rip-off of the Windows Media Centre. Oh well.

DX10 is coupled to Vista because it needs the new display driver model. Retrofitting a new display driver model into an old OS is dangerous (serious potential for ugly bugs) and expensive. So it's not happening. No conspiracy, no forcing you to upgrade. Just that facts that doing such major things to XP would probably just introduce so many bugs it wouldn't be worth it.

He is just a 12 year old Linux "l337 k1dd13" get over yourself buddy. Linux sucks.

Hah, im 12 years old because I know how to use linux? 0_o, whatever you say. Stick with windows, I'll save a couple hundred dollars because I use a free OS :). An OS that comes with a program called "open office" same as microsoft office, except one big difference.... it's free. instead of 300$.

Vista is nice looking, but for now.....can stay as a beta

Yeah and there is another difference, it's crap compared to Office. People over the age of 16 can afford a good OS.

Is this "beta" worth getting yet or should i just wait for the official release ?

The beta aint bad. So far I do really like vista. The GUI is very cool, navigiating I find much easier. Comes with Chess, I got my wireless drivers to work perfectly with it. My sound drivers work(Audigy), although the ones for Vista wouldn't work(Creative sucks). I did get one BSOD when going to edit something for my sound card but that should be expected, the drivers wern't ever for Vista.

You can tell the Video drivers are really really bad right now. Ati and Nvidia are working on making some good ones for the final release. Multi Monitor support seemed a bit dodgy because of all this. Although Starcraft(without installing, running of my Xp HD) ran perfectly.

Overall Vista is pretty cool. I really do like the interface and the new networking setup. I found accessing everything like setting up my static Ip to be a breeze. I turned UAC off pretty quick, was very easy.

Overall? Not one big complaint over Vista on Microsofts part. I really do like how it navigates though and yes it is different from Xp. Having a customizable favorites menu right to your left is also very nice. Gadgets are pretty cool.

It overall ran really good considering it's in beta without optimizations running and with a bunch of debugging software going on in the background.

Actually people of any age can afford a "good" os, because linux os a "good" os, and it's free. And actually open office works perfectly well, I have had 0 problems with it, and prefer it over microsoft office any day. Theres another perk to not having your "good" OS, you know what ive never gotten, or even had to worry about? A virus, or spyware. hah, I don't even think an antivirus for linux exists, it would be pointless. This must be an upside to your "good" os I guess right? You get to have a million free programs!!! maade by companies like gator, that give you wonderful pop ups and change your home page to pornographic websites.... oh man... I sure envy you.

That's what we like to call a fallacy.

Or at least salesmanship.

Dude, if you can't keep a windows PC spyware and virus free, than you don't deserve your own computer.

Really, Linux is a pretty good OS, but get over yourself.

Yes it would be pointless!! Cuz Linux has very little of the market. And if it got big, then it would probably have more viruses than Windows!!!
Also Open Office IS ALSO ON WINDOWS.

Ok Linux is good but Windows is also good. Windows has very few problems. Linux has very few problems. Windows has much more hardware support than linux. Windows has better drivers. Windows has plenty of free programs. Linux has plenty of free programs. Windows has DirectX, Linux has OpenGL.

Linux really isn't better than Windows. The only reason you should go with Linux is if you can't put up with Windows for some reason. Windows comes on basically any desktop pc so price of it really dosn't matter.

So true :D

I use it for writing all my papers and exams.

Mhmmm, IF it held a larger market share. But it doesn't, and there aren't viruses :-P. If windows had good security.... viruses wouldn't as much of a problem. These are IF's :-P. Windows may have free programs, but I have yet to pay for a program for linux. In MY opinion at least, linux is far better than windows. And I haven't had a problem with drivers except the ATI ones, which I was able to fix using yum. Yum is another thing linux has that makes using windows a pain. Yum allows you to get a program, without even having to search for it on the net. For instance I could type "yum install xIRC" it then downloads and install the program xIRC for me. And whether or not windows comes with a desktop pc isn't really important to any gamer, because most gamers (at least that I know) don't buy pc's from companies such as DELL or what not, because they want a machine that can run their games well. So they build their own, and HAVE to buy an OS. Which is why I got linux.

^_o ... I got my dell xps dimension gen 5 over a year ago now, had 0 problems and runs all my games perfectly ...
