I had an issue getting my CH-Products Combat Stick to work with HL-2-2. With gamepad enabled, the character would turn and not strafe.

Wow!! what a difference in gameplay once solved.

Looks like I figured it out.

I had to disable gamepad and make the following Joystick.cfg. I also had to make sure my 8-way POV Hat (not 4 way) was set to POV-DX mode in the software that came with the controller (CombatStick). I then reassigned weapons to the hat via HL-2 keybord setup.

// JOYSTICK FILE
joystick "1"
-jlook
joy_name "JS"
joy_advanced "1"
joy_advaxisx "3"
joy_advaxisy "1"
joy_forwardsensitivity "-1"
joy_sidesensitivity "1"
joy_forwardthreshold "0.10"
joy_sidethreshold "0.10"
joyadvancedupdate

I like this total ANALOG vehicle control.

I am finding that I can move in finer forward and sideways movements with the analog control then I can with the keyboard and its great for peaking around corners or moving along ledges. I can also now set the axis response and sensitivity with the CH-Prod software that came with the stick.

The vehicle control is now awsome. I can move the wheels in fine increments with out them shimmying from keyboard tapping. My speed is now variable and I can slow down a bit and drive around and enjoy without bumping everything. All while sitting back and having a beer. Looking forward to more of this game now.

Note: I do have carpal tunnel and upper back pain from all the typing I do in my profession, so this fix was badly needed. I still use keyboard commands but are programmed to the controller as I us the 4-way hat for straffing with A-D and the Expert Trackball M1 & M2 for forward-back. The trackball for looking around. Its nice to have redundant controlls when desired.

Oh whats the use. The game is over already. Darn!!!!!! Gawd what a fast ending.

analog joystick strafing/movement

I have used this style in FPS's (with mouse-aiming in left hand and joystick-moving in right hand) for over a dozen years, and I like the analog control too. I used to have bookmarks to posts like yours, but they got lost in a reformat, and I couldn't remember how to program this. So thanks for posting this, Chris.

Oh... In what folder do I find the Joystick.cfg file - or how do I make one?

***EDIT: Ooops! I did some more searching and found this post:

and this addressed the imminent problem of the left/right axis getting reversed when you enter vehicles:
