i'm getting new computer speakers because my poppy 4.1 speakers are broken, (they turned into 2.1 speakers one day.... ;-/ )

i'm planning on buying/making some sort of speaker stands for the back speakers

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=36-116-118&depa=0

i'm thinking about the megaworks 5.1 speakers, they have great reviews from everywhere.

my budget is around $200, what really matters to me is the surround sound

is 6.1 or 7.1 worth it? if i got a 7.1 or so system i'd get an audigy to go along with it since i have good but onboard sound

any suggestions? good speakers?

and if anyone knows a place online that sells speaker mounts or systems, let me know

I currently have those speakers, and I must say I am very pleased with them myself. You cannot, however, get 7.1 unless you are fully commited to spending $400+ on speakers, which I daresay is rather stupid.

why not get 5.1 surround sound headphones.. I hear they are pretty good now.
I would say 6.1, 7.1 etc is over kill for a computer game, seeing that 5.1 is what the top games are designed for, and it gives you enough precision for games anyway (especially with headphones)

Headphones are good as well. I mainly use mine, but their kinda broken...

I bought some TDK Tremors 2.1 the other day and they are really very good. Pretty expensive for 2.1's but the quality is flash. I also have a very good pair of sony ear goggles (headphones for those of you born in the '20's).

I never saw the appeal of 5.1 setups. I've had a 5.1 setup at one stage and it was a waste of space really.

I have a set of 5.1 headphones. They are nothing spectacular. Slightly below average sound quality offset by the surround feature. And the headphones lack any bass. I had to create a custom equalizer so the headphones sounded alright.

With a 7.1 system, you have to have games and movies that will actually use all of those speakers. So keep that in mind when you are deciding what speaker system to buy.

If you are spending $200 on speakers, I suggest you get a new audio card (like Audigy 2 ZS) unless you have Soundstorm built in. All on-board sound sucks, unless it is a Soundstorm APU. You wouldn't be maximizing your speakers if you were using on-baord sound.

logitech z680 speakers \o/ work great with soundstorm, if u have a spdif-out on the back of ur pc then its that.

What's wrong with 7.1 Soundmax on-board sound? I have SPDIF too. :P

I need to buy some surround sound headphones.

The Z-5300's are Logitech's second highest caliber system next to the Z-680's, their top notch system.

Why settle for second best?

i guess 7.1 is not worth it... perhaps i will make another post with more specific questions
