Getting people to join your server?

I want to test a map, but people never join my server. I don't have a router and I'm only using the default XP firewall. When I refresh the list of servers while running my map, I don't see mine listed. Does that mean nobody else can see it?

I think you need a dedicated server.

Or get a friend in your server with you, not many people are going to join an empty server, if there are atleast a couple of people in there then you have more of a chance.

have a good name for server, add good maps in ur map listing, advertise everywhere!! ;p

first turn your firewall off (temporarily)
second, you have to give them your ip address (http://www.whatismyip.com) they can't see it on the master server unless you run a dedicated server.

So you're saying all the servers I see on the server list are dedicated? And how would they join by knowing by my IP?

no thats not true. I was once testing my map by myself and someone just dropped in to play. I didn't know the person and he said he found my server from the list. I think there is a problem with the way Steam displays the servers and I remember a lot of people were discussing it/complaining over at steampowered.com. Someone discovered that Steam gets a list of servers depending on their IP (starting with the lowest one) and only gets a few thousand to display to you. Therefore, if your server IP is high, your server won't appear to many people. It's true and it happened to me. I have a dynamic IP (DSL) so my IP adress changes all the time. One day I made a dedicated server just for fun. People started pouring in like nuts and in a few minutes, the server was absolutely full! However, the next day I made a server again (same name and configurations), but 0 people joined for like 5 hours - I'm not BSing you. So, there is something wrong with the way Steam loads people's server list but it might be fixed by now. Just have an appealing server name and good connection - it's the best you can do on your part.

In DM, I can only get my server to appear under Lan even though I've tried sv_lan 0. How weird is that?

For everyonen with the "ahh my server doesn't show up" probem, you say it only shows up in lan, because thats just what it does, if you tryed joining your server with your real ip address (on your pc or your lan) it doesn't work, you have to join threw lan. So your server will not show up in the list for you. So all you have to do is have a buddy look for it, or see if they can connect to it, then your good. Otherwise, open some ports on your rounter, and or firewall.

I don't have a router, and disabled my firewall. I have been to a server before where I talked to the guy and he said all he did was create a normal server, that's it. So how come his shows up on the list?

And in CS, my server doesn't show up anywhere, not even on LAN.

The sv_lan 0 and then reload thing didn't help, either.

when i host a non-dedi cs:s server, it doesn't show up in lan oddly, but people connect heh

i have a router with dmz enabled, no firewall

Well that's probably because it shows up in internet.
