Cant you do a "original" mod? You cant do that anymore! originality isnt the best way to go all the time.

Just some things.
Interplay doesnt care about giants.
There are currently no copyrights for a giants 2.
If you change the names and look of things they will avoid copyright laws.
This is pretty much an original mod. Everything in it has to totally be re-designed to avoid copyrighting. There is going to be a brand new story line. There are going to be more/new races, creatures, weapons, technonlogy.
Our team is making this mod because we like giants, and we want to have a half-life 2 version of it. If you dont like the idea stfu.

Interplay may not care about Giants, but the actual developers, Planet Moon Studios; you know those guys, the people that actually own the rights to GIANTS, really like the idea and have expressed wanting to do a sequal.

However, since the first one was completel unsuccessful and with the incompetence of Interplay, it probably will never see the light of day.

Just one suggestion though if you plan to go through with it; don't let a Giant be instantly killed if he is run over by a speeder on turbo; it was really annoying.

ok dont copy citzen kabuto even though its one of my most admired games ever made.... instead make new giants vs small people. have fun making your own characters.

example:

play as Giants or people, giants are mad cause people are like annoying insects and people dont want Giants walking around destroying everything. Make Lord of the Rings type worlds with huge players.

Anything is better than a copy

We arent making a copy of the original game.
We are pretty much re-designing everything, but they will still be similar to the things seen in giants.
There are going to add in 2-3 new races and 1 playable one. Which we already have designed.
We are going to make this game even better and even more addictive than the original giants game. We already have several ideas on how to do this.
There will be new weapons and new everything, as well as new environment for you to run around in :)

why are people being like this? "Be original, be original" - originality isn't what makes a good game. Is counter-strike original? is half life 2 deathmatch original? is quake 3 original?

I say go for it, and as for the person who said Giants was unsuccessful - what are you talking about?

Giants was great, good luck with this.

As strange as this may sound... Counter-Strike was an original idea when it was made. It's all the CS clones that make it seem that way.

As for HL2DM... how many games have people throwing toilets/chairs/computers/etc at each other as weapons? The only thing copied was stuff from HL1. The rest may have been inspired by things like 1984, War of the Worlds, etc... but not copied. It's basically just plain deathmatch (except for the physics) but it is with original levels, new weapons, new characters, etc... whereas a mod that is a direct copy of an old game has none of that.

All the people in here are saying is that you should make up your own IP rather than taking an old game and Sourcifying it. There are several reasons behind that:

1. Rarely will a game company let you release a free version of their own game as a mod for another game. Legal trouble could ensue.
2. Everyone will compare it to the original. Sure, it might draw some people... but nostalgia will only get you so far. If people liked the original and yours isn't quite up to the same level of quality they would probably just keep playing the original. If the copy turns out great almost all of the credit goes to the original and if it sucks almost all of the blame gets put on the shoulders of the people that copied it. Just look at the Goldeneye sequel... it may be a decent game but the comparison to the original hurt it tremendously because it was one of the best N64 games ever.
3. Why spend all of that time and effort just to take other people's ideas and make something that people can already play? Does a forgery have the same value as the original?
4. No game is perfect. There is always a way to make improvements.
5. New technology brings new possibilities. The original game may have been limited by the technology at the time. If so, it would be possible to make a much better game based on the same general idea. This is where Doom vs Doom III comes into play. Something like Doom III was what they originally had in mind... but Doom was the product. If I had to choose between the two I would go with the more recent one.

Yeah, sometimes it might work. Some people could be (and have been) able to pull off a remake of something that is better than the original. It's just more probable that it will go in the other direction. If you think you can do it better... by all means, give it a shot.

If you make this, and do it well, I will love you so very much. So very very much. Giants was such a great game but no-one played it!

I didn't check the date of the original post. Oh bum.
