Gmail now allows you to delete messages

Now there's an easy-to-find delete button for those messages you really don’t want. For everything else, there’s Archive. (Archive removes a message from your Inbox, but it’s still in All Mail and you can always search for it.) Learn more...

Not necessarily needed with the amount of space allotted, but still a good feature to have.

You could before... it's just you dont have to use the dropdown menu now...

Oh yeah. I think I meant to say you can do it with just one button now. :/
