Godspeed Discovery

Looks like a successful takeoff. Is this the lasts shuttle mission?

I'll be telling my kids how they missed out on concord and the shuttle by being born too late.

Wish I could've filmed it from my house but I am at school.

Give us more notice than 1 min 30 secs when the last one launches! xD

Be sad to see it go though. But it is time for a new craft.

What's the replacement going to be?

At the moment I don't think there is one. They were going to build the Ares rockets but Obama canceled that which was fair enough I guess considering their lack of money. I guess they're planing on using the Russians for the moment and then maybe private operators to get to the space station.

I think that its crazy its all coming to an end but the Commercial aspect is that it'll be cheaper and we can sit back for a bit and save some cash. 100 years from now everything will have a stamp of Earth or Mars Inc on it anyway

Dammit, I thought this thread was for another announcement from NASA... that they had discovered godspeed engine capabilities.

Please tell me that us Brits are not involved in the construction of this in any way. The Beagle II Lander was effectively a very expensive canonball that we fired at Mars and never saw again. It's either burned up, trashed or soaring helplessly through the void as we speak.

My bad: The Endaevor will also make a final flight in April.

One before last. The Atlantis will make the final flight in June.

There are two STS missions left after yesterday's - STS-134 is planned for April and is Endeavour's last flight. 135 is in June like you say and is Discovery's last flight and the last planned flight of the space shuttle program.

Definitely the end of an era, to say the very least...

I already said 'my bad'. :(
