Well, how about that guys? What if you guys make optional golden account, for which you need to pay like $5 once per year or something to that extend. Yeah, many people will be against it, but for example golden account can give you ability to change your title (under nickname), give ability to have a pic in a signature (with size limit), and another features. It works very well at forums like somethingawful or gamespot, plus $5 per year is so little, that a lot of people can afford it (at least people who visit and post on these forums frequently). If you worry about people going crazy with titles and signatures, you can set rules, not to include offensive things in there.

So, is it a stupid idea? I would pay, even more than $5.

Why should i pay for somthing other forums offer for free.and it doesnt cost the hl2.net guys anything to do anything of what you just said except mabye 10 min.

Well yes Pendragon, I guess I didn’t think about “weight of opinion”, it even happens now, with post count.

Neom, and so, what’s your point? Somethingawful forums (for example again) are no different than any other forums on internet, but they still make you pay them JUST to post.

well ok if you want to pay money to post then go ahead.

Hehe, But i'd like to have postcounts removed, they are creating a pretty elitist group imo, compared to the other users. I think it was better when we diddn't see the post count. But the ranks are fine, since otherwise you couldn't tell the differance between an active member and a less active member. I know of a finnish forum thats more active the this one wich doesn't have ranks or postcounts, so it's very difficult to read threads when you don't know whos a troll or whos the mod or the guy who's been very active and knows stuff.

my postcount sucks, but i'm as active as anyone else. hopefully people realise it doesn't count for anything :)
as for a golden account thing, well, i'm sure munneh would appreciate some more cash, but personally I dont think its worthwhile due to the same reasons pendragon gave

tbh, I don't think my opinions are any more valid becuase I have an embaressingly high postcount..

I really think a Gold Account, like custom titles, would separate the forum ;(

Creating a gold account would cause this forum to no longer be something that is purely free for the members. The site would start to get into commercial website territory and that really wouldn't be a good thing, the extra money for running the site would certainly be a good thing but IMO its not something that should be done.

I've thought about it and although it would be nice to get loads of cash it's not what the site's all about. We don't need the money and we don't want to see this site turned into another corporate hell hole :) We will be looking into providing more forum features soon though.

Well, how about sending this money to some good cause, like penny-arcade did? $5 maybe is not much in USA, but imagine how it would help children in Africa or given to any other charity.

But as many said, it would probably separate people into groups. Oh well, just tossing around ideas :)

But i'd do that afte HL2 is released :p

But one thing that would be nice, and this has been mentioned before, but I forgot by who, is that when the release of HL2 is nigh, that you create a forum for us active users, so that we could get a haven from the newbs.

This would exclude lots of ppl, that would kill many opinions that can be a hell of a lot better opinions then some "active users" opinions.

Creating a special forum for us "active members" would just make newbs feel left out, and it would probably cause alot of them to spam. Besides not all newbs are bad.

As said before, it just causes a conflict between user groups... not a good idea.
