Sorry for the dramatic headline but three days of frustration has (hopefully) come to an end. I started and also have begun to see many posts here and elsewhere about the game hanging on the loading screen after somebody tries to reinstall\download the game. Well as many people (including myself) found out, it "finished" downloading and would start the game but would freeze. HL2 would even let me adjust my settings and what not, then would freeze on the next "loading" screen...of course as mentioned in some posts the game has not "finished" downloading...anywhere from 50-70% is all (seems like a huge bug to me?) Then of course how could I not have realized, that the game continues to download in the background even though many people (i'm sure) think it's done. The good old "monitor" (right click steam sys tray icon) feature, shows hl2 is still downloading...Sweet mother of Mary...I hope thats it....but come now peeps, that seems like one messed up glitch/feature design to me.....*takes excederin, when the first "download" screen says your all done "Launch game when ready"...you would think it's done :p.....sorry for the rambling, i'm tired and now a little happier (I hope)...ps LAST time I ever buy via Steam or maybe even Valve :( ....peace. Love.

i've been having the same problem, same freezing on the loading screen, after trying to start a new game. the fact is i have the game on DVD so how could there be a problem of a not-finished download from steam? plus on Half-life 2's properties steam says it is 100% installed, ready for offline game and not even the monitro shows any activity...
i cant believe i paid for a game i cant play
my specs are:
Athlon XP 3000+
512Mb DDR 400Mhz
nVidia Geforce 5700FX LE

Dr. Love,

There does indeed appear to be a bug that allows people to start up games that are not finished downloading. I think I remember Counterstrike: Source was trying to tempt me there as well when it wasn't ready.

Yeah, that happened with HL:Source on my PC... the monitor decided to stop showing HL:Source but only HL2 as downloading. So, of course I assumed it was finished, it said ready to play afterall. Nope, the entire HL2 download needed to finish first.

Another interesting thing however is that HL2 in the game browser mode still says 'download & install' as opposed to 'play' like my other games. But when I go into the 'play games' section, HL2 runs fine... steam probably still has a few kinks.

What's worrying me now, is all those times i stopped the HL2 preload, and what it could have done to my game. I mean, it seems fine and all (minus the sound/texture stuttering).

Maybe the stuttering can be isolated to individuals who stopped the hl2 preload at some point (I'm sure many did it).

Valve do have options on this page at the bottom to check the HL2 files for any corruption.
