Fear Factory
Falkenbach
Opeth
Chimaira

edit : Oh wait... classic? nvm.

Real bands :p.

Children of Bodom
Metal Church
Anal ****
Manilla Road
Opeth
Dark Tranquility
Iron Maiden
(Old) Slayer

i've heard of opeth, and children of bodom, opeth, are, like, country! well the songs i've heard.

Opeth are like...light metal with a few other genres thrown in from time to time.

You mean Anal ****? No way! My favorite is "Guy Lombardo"!

Havent heard that song, but the song names are just hilarious.
"Chris Barnes Is A Pussy"

Oh yeah, btw

like others have said

Metallica (MASTER! OF! PUPPETS!!!)
Megadeth (start out with Rust In Peace album)
Slayer
Iron Maiden (check em out live, awesome stuff)
Dream Theatre

then if you want something newer but still awesome, check out In Flames (one of the best metal bands to date!)

If you are looking for a more classical heavy metal approach try Devin Townsend Band. :)

I wouldn't really call The DTB classical heavy metal like Iron Maiden or something, but I'm sure that genious Devin has done something of the sort down the line of all his projects.

Just listening to Synchestra for like, my 1023848th time right now, actually. I really do recommend The DTB to anyone, but I wouldn't call them heavy metal like heavy metal in the Iron Maiden sense. DTB are like metal/progressive/experimental/thrash/industrial stuff... or something.

Good old Devin Townsend.

OVERKILL! they seriously rule
and all the ones that go without saying, iron maiden, slayer, metallica

Huh? I've not heard of Manilla Road, but only the last two (Slayer probably more Thrash, even) are Heavy Metal bands. The term doesn't cover everything in Metal, it's a subcategory.

What the hell are the differences between the different types of metal?
Ack, okay, this may take a bit because there are quite a lot.

Heavy Metal - Often referred to as 'classic' Metal, it features the standard guitarists, vocalist(s) and drums. Reliance on rhythmic playing and soloing, and uses clean (singing) vocals.

Death Metal - Reliance on harsh (screamed or growled) vocals, distorted guitars, 'blastbeating' (a drumming technique where the bass and snare drums are played together in succession hard and rapidly), soloing and lyrics generally based around gore, anger, anti-religion etc.

  • Melodic Death Metal - a further subgenre of Death Metal that retains many of the DM characteristics (harsh vocals, distortion, soloing etc.) but focuses on more melodic riffs and style of play.
  • Melodeath - a variation of Melodic DM that originated in Gothenburg, it follows its own unique style and is often panned by purists for being too 'poppy'.
  • Technical Death Metal - DM focused on playing with extreme precision and skill, generally follows a standard formula and often varies in key and time signatures.
  • Brutal Death Metal - places more emphasis on overbearing drumming and deep, growled vocals.

Black Metal - Characterised by satanical lyrics and the emphasis on creating an 'atmosphere', rather than showing off. Vocals are shrieked in a raspy tone, blastbeats are common and there's generally no soloing. Production quality of BM is generally poor, but naturally it's not a necessity. Keyboards are sometimes used.

  • Melodic/Symphonic Black Metal - fairly self-explanatory. Much more use of keyboards and melody than regular BM.

Thrash Metal - Generally described as a faster, heavier version of Heavy Metal. Characterised by fast guitar and drumwork, and either clean or harsh vocals.

Power Metal - The most melodic form of Metal, it relies heavily on keyboards, soaring guitars and high-pitched clean vocals all played at a fast pace (incredibly fast is usually called Speed Metal). Lyrics usually focus on fantasy.

Doom Metal - You could simply describe it as the anti-Power Metal. Doom Metal is slow, atmospheric and grim, with little trace of blastbeating or soloing.

  • Funeral Doom Metal - Even slower than Doom.
  • Drone Doom Metal - Even sloooowwwerr than Funeral.
  • Sludge Metal - Doom metal mixed with Hardcore vocals and occasional bursts of speed.

Progressive Metal - Incorporates aspects of Progressive Rock, PM song structures are generally complex with cleaner vocals and variable key changes. PM albums are known to follow a simple concept throughout.

Gothic Metal - Generally very 'epic' music - atmospheric and melodic, sometimes incorporating soloing and heavier drumwork. Most Gothic Metal bands feature two or more vocalists - usually a man and woman, with the woman providing operatic clean vocals and the man harsher, lower vocals.

Grindcore - Regarded as the most extreme form of Metal (some don't even consider it Metal), it's a mash together of Thrash and Death Metal - it's very fast and very brutal, with harsh vocals. Songs generally only last a couple of minutes, and a unique feature of Grind is incorporating movie or TV snippets at the beginning of or during songs. Some bands use a drumming machine to play even faster.

----------------------------

Those are the basic genres of Metal, but of course boundaries are always going to be crossed. Common crossovers are things like Black/Death Metal, Thrash/Death or Prog/Heavy. And then there's the hundreds of other describers that bands come up with that I can't be bothered to write ;) - stuff like Folk Metal, which is generally Death or Black bands that only use folk lyrics, or Viking Metal which are DM bands that only sing about Vikings (like Amon Amarth, <3), and bands like Finntroll who use BM structures, DM vocals and Polka-style accordions to create a unique feel. It's an incredibly adaptive genre, overall.

Beethoven is ****ing metal.

\m/ >.< \m/

Oh and for the record, I'm pretty sure Falkenbach is Viking metal too...

Should definitely give them a listen.

I didn't think he'd care what type of metal I put.

Totally forgot Kreator and Immolation. They're good stuff too.

Gave those a listen (Axyon's lot) and it's realllllllllllllllllllllllllllly not my thing, I can take some Hardcore and some Power, but by and large it doesn't sound too pleasing to my ears :E

Machine Head is all you need

The album? In that case I agree. If you want some really classic Heavy Metal. (some would call it Hard Rock, but it's still one of the albums that started it all off!)

Classic heavy metal in the vein of Black Sabbath and the like?

Try The Sword. Great stuff from a great new band.

I think they're playing here, Birmingham, tomorrow. Could of been last friday, mind. I'll go check. I haven't got much planned for tomorrow so, hey.

Classic Metal?

Reign In Blood is the mother of all metal albums. Vulgar Display of Power is also a classic.

Nice! Hopefully you got/get to see them. I haven't had the chance yet but I am waiting patiently. Maybe post a review of their live performance if you get a chance...

It looks pretty doubtful that I'll be going: haven't really got the money for a train ticket there and back and I've no idea on how much the tickets are or what they're status is at the moment. Ah, well. I'll just... sit in all night. :(
