My friend is looking to buy a new video card so that he can play crysis. he is currently using AMD Phenom 8400 or smth like that and 3 GB of ram with Vista (going to upgrade to XP). He said he wants the cheapest video card to play crysis at medium - high settings and he wants a card that wont be outdated or have price drops in the next 4 - 6 months.

His budget is $140 or lower.

i think he wants a card that wont be outdated and have the possibility of a price drop in the next few months. really with most today's cards, you can have an excellent card that can play everything for that price. cards are getting to the point where they aren't being outdated as fast with current game engines.

It's unavoidable. You take what you want when you want, time will screw you over no matter what. Obviously if something has been announced then you have a better idea, right now I say is a good time to get that 9800 posted above. But it will get lower in price in the time you designated, and may be outdated by some newer model.

I bought a Radeon 4850 two months ago and it already had a price drop. Theres no way you can get a videocard that wont be outshone in 6 months, and theres no
way you can get a card that wont have a price drop in less than that amount of time.

The only way to future proof is to buy the new generation card on day one. At least that way newer cards are a way off and price drops don't mean much as you've enjoyed the card up till those drops.
