I'm going to upgrade my comp so I need to know what's a good pci slot video card for under $300 (able to play HL2, Doom 3, Quake 4 and games like that) .... Preferbly nvidia

get a 6600 or 6800, ive just got the 7800gtx and it cost me 380 pounds

the six series is good and can be sli'd it depends on what motherboard you have.

not a patch on the 7800 though ^^

I don t know what motherboard I have my computer is 3or 4 years old eMachine
I think it's intel

LOL wow......you accutlly meant PCI SLOT not pci-e slot well your definitly not going to find a $300 pci card the best pci card you can get is a 5700le
also are you sure you dont have an AGP slot you might want to check that

Well your pretty much out of luck with a PCI slot. I believe the best PCI Card you can get is the Radeon 9250, which won't run Half-Life 2 that great. It costs about $65.

Yes, make sure you have or don't have an AGP slot. That may influence you decision of what you want to purchase. Like who said, a 6600 or 6800 is a great choice. ;)

I don't remember where i looked to see where it said it was a pci, can any1 tell me how to find

Whatever the case, its not a very good idea to stick a $300ish video card in a 3 to 4 year old computer. If it is true that you only have PCI and not AGP, then dont bother with a graphics card, just grab yourself an X-Box 360 core system for $300.

i have X-box 1 already and HL2 for it. I just want to be able to play pc games because they are better.

And i live in Canada $400 x360, cores suck doesn't come with any thing spend extra $100 for normal 1

He said CORE xbox 360. Anyways, I recently upgraded my video card to an X700 Pro 256mb (AGP) for about $250. It's better than 6400 in most cases, but maybe a little bit more expensive. I also got a 512 mb stick of ram at London Drugs or something. Altogether I paid $320. Worth it because I can play FEAR at high settings.

if you open up the side of your computer and theres probably 4 slots 3 are white and if you have an agp slot it should be brown or black

Yeah i thought it was a PCI slot, haven't met a person so far that didn't mean what they said.

Might I recommend you save up a bit if you don't want the xbox360? Get yourself a PCI-Express motherboard w/ a 7800GT. Also a processor, preferably an AMD64 or a recent Pentium 4, otherwise I'd say you're out of luck, even if you do have the AGP port, seeing as how the best AGP card is what, a 6800GT? (aren't they discontinued anyway?) Also in a 3-4 year computer I'd expect like 256Mb RAM at most and a Pentium 3 maybe 4. So its your choice.

My computer is 4 yrs. old and it's e-machines brand and only 256MB RAM

Its Intel Celeron though.......heard that wasn't very good for gaming

Right you are, they're basically for officework. You might want to consider a PCI-E mobo as I mentioned above, w/ an AMD64, at least a 3200+.

This is exactly why I recommended an X-Box 360. He basically needs a new computer, so I thought, hey why not a 360? I can guarantee that he will not get any enjoyment out of that computer no matter what he upragdes.

You might want to upgrade your PSU as well, just as a precaution :)

You will probably be better off buying a whole new computer. What's your current specifications?

*sigh*, dumbdude is right I guess, just get an xbox360 man, theres no hope. 300 > 1,500+.

In Canada, Core Xbox 360 cost 400$... 'nuff said.
Bloodly Americans and their cheaper prices
EDIT: I wonder how you missed the price though.

Ya Fliko is right $400 and all sold out in Prince George, B.C. and the 360 has so many faults and stuff.

My computer is Celeron 2.5 GHz, Intel Extreme Graphics, 256 MB RAM

W/E already have HL2 for xbox 1 and I want the PS3

Gambneto, you still haven't mentioned if you have an AGP slot or not. But I take it from your first post you don't.

If that is the case then I'd say you can:

A, Go and blow 1200+ on an entire gaming PC (pre-built if you don't know how)
B, Carefully select individual components to put in your current PC (you'll have to start with a new motherboard if your current one has no AGP/PCIE slot (and maybe get a tech to assemble it for you)
C, Go buy an Xbox 360. They're not that bad and they'll only get better with new games and stuff
D, Wait for better advice from someone here...or just ditch the PC and wait for PS3...

And if you go with B, you'll want a new Motherboard, 256 to 512Mb more RAM, and I guess you could keep the celeron, and maybe upgrade that later...oh and a graphics card, depending on what kind of motherboard you get (agp or pci-e)

...

my comp basic specs:
amd athon xp 3000+
1gb pc2700 (2-512 mb sticks)
128mb geforefx 5200
- will be upgraded to a 256 ati card in a day or too when it comes
- ive been waiting too long to upgrade. 128 is old tech.
500 watt xconnect
- ive got each of my 3 hds, dvd burner, and fans on seperate connection for optimum power distribution

320gb hard drive space on 3 hard drives
- one runs windows 120gb
- one has games 120gb
- one has extra storage 80gb

if you ever read pcgamer im inbetween entry and mid level machine. theres dream level after mid.you need to catch up if you want to play some higher end games.

my opion- choose pc or console. dont do both or you are just a waste. (i think all console is a waste but thats just me)

Intel processors are good for gaming, amd is good as well and more popular.

so why did you post your specs? i dont remember this thread about being about your computer... :|

intel is barly OKAY i guess. not good. if you ever play on an intel then amd of equivilence, u will notice amd is MUCH better

Strangely enough, I don't remember this thread being about Intel vs. AMD either :p. As I have said before, you current computer, no matter what you upgrade, will bring you no satisfaction at all. I suggest you wait for the PS3 unless you want to buy a new computer which I don't think you want to do.

Forget a new PC or a PS3, buy yourself a monkey. I promise you, you won't regret it.

So are there any ways to find out what kind of slot pci or agp without opening the computer?

Im a student so i dont have enough for a new computer.

Hazar is it PCI?

sigh...

Just wait for the PS3...

(and no it's not PCI, it's PCI-Express, it's also NOT under $300)

u and ur f***ing consoles...
i wanna see you do all the stuff u do on your computer on you f***ing consoles! CONSOLES ARE A F***ING WASTE I TELL YOU!!!

Who and who's f*cking consoles?

I just thought that since Gambneto doesn't seem to know enough about PCs, AND since he doesn't want to spend too much money, he would be better off saving his money for a console...

i wanna see you do all the stuff u do on your computer on you f***ing consoles! CONSOLES ARE A F***ING WASTE I TELL YOU!!!

A waste of what? Money? I think you're a silly cock.

New Consoles = around $500 (+games and stuff)
New Gaming PC = around $1300 (+games and stuff)

Things to do on New Consoles = Watch movies, music, play games, play online...
Things to do on Gaming PC = Watch movies, music, play games, play online, use way more applications, surf net (I hope/bet consoles will be able to do this soon as well)

I wouldn't say they're a waste at all...just a cheaper way to do some of the things a PC can.

Let's face it: Consoles. Are. For. People. Who. Cannot. Afford. A. Decent. Computer.

Seems pretty simple to me. I haven't gotten a console since the N64. And that was for ZELDA!!! But, now I can just play it on my computer emulator, can't I? Exclusive games are made to entice people into buying a piece of hardware that will become obsolete within a year.

Give this guy a break.

To find out what mobo you have, this program might help. AIDA32
Just download the program, unzip the files, and run it.
When it's running, click motherboard (or mainboard), in the next screen, click it again. And voila, there's the info you need.

NOTE: this is an old program, so it doesn't recognize most new hardware.

So no AGP slot? That's too bad. What number of socket is your cpu? Probably socket 478 or 775. You could search for a PCI-E mainboard that has that socket, although I'm not sure if they exist.

its socket 478 since 775 wasnt out 4 years ago and there is a pci-e socket 478 board but i wouldnt get since it would bottleneck bad your better off buying a agp 478 board
