In short, Google+ is Google's answer to Facebook (even if they claim Facebook is not the competition). The network is finally in it's trial stage, and I must say - it's much more intuitive and feature-rich than what Facebook has to offer. Not to mention, it looks to be more flexible in terms of security. "Circles" and "Hangouts" are interesting appeals. The ability to video conference with multiple folks, create your own circles (as opposed to being limited to being connected to School/Work groups) and a more intuitive way of uploading information and choosing who to share it with is a welcome to popular social networking. Type in any given contact to see exactly what they're seeing on your page (and selecting which groups see anything you post/add).

It's about ****ing time something with an actual decent, more private and competitive feature set surfaced to tango with Facebook.

XKCD sums up my hype pretty well:

This thread can be used to share information and invites for hl2.netters - I'll have a few invites soon (though they're pouring in and I'm sure several of you already have them). Phone apps / operation already available in most cases.

People have every reason to be skeptical given the failure of Wave and the intense competition, but let me just say: don't knock it until you try it. If nothing else, it's a great (and certainly more secure) additional social tool to utilize for whatever reason you may have - business and seamless integration with other Google services come to mind.

I really interested to try this. Does anyone have any invites?

I'd like an invite if anyone has them free. Anything google makes me horny!

google is the Devil.
I'm not giving them more info then they already have one me already.

Seems they have closed invitations and stuff now. I like a lot of the new ideas google has but it always erks me a bit they put pop ups or integration into gmail, that being their main or existing user base.

so now Google doesn't have to stalk my searches to get information on me, I can give it directly to them?

Sounds great!

I'm only on FB to see what my family are doing in far away lands, so I probably wont use this.

Excellent contribution, Diane.

Neither would be one of the many adjectives that would work in your reply, but I guess you're bilingual so you have an excuse.

Agreeing with someone that they aren't interested in the thread is redundant and stupid.
Jesus, defensive much? Calm down. As if you've never made any useless posts.

I don't really care about Google+ but this is pretty damned funny.

I'm quite interested in it, if nothing more than for the circles feature. The one area that has always bothered me about FB is the lack of a hierarchy within your friends list. I think FB is a good way to keep in touch with people, esp extended family (something I'm guilty of not doing tbh) but at the same time I don't necessarily want them pouring over the activities of my various social circles. Explaining to Aunt Maude that Todd was only joking about that wild weekend we had that ended up with us burying those call girls (sorry, hookers) outside of Vegas is not something I particularly care to do. Being able to delineate within your contacts is no bad thing. I'm sure FB will undoubtedly respond, but I'm up for giving Google + a go.

I have a feeling it will be a flop. But I think it could be useful as a social network for business uses since it might make it easier to set up meetings, keep notes, and exchange information using multi-person chat.

I don't see many people migrating from Facebook where they've established themselves to go over to Google+.

I know they say that competition isn't the point but then... What is? If you're not gonna compete, people are probably gonna just happily stay on Facebook and do all their stuff there rather than creating another account with Google and having 2 going at the same time.

Even the name sounds crappy. They could have at least come up with a title for it instead of just "Let's put Google in it so that people know it's a Google product" and coming out with 'Google+'...

It sounds better than facebook, but I'm so sick of this ****ing social networking bullshit creeping into every godamned thing. I have half a mind to delete my unused facebook account now that video game developers/publishers are pushing integration, and steam does it now too even. Hell if I'm going to make another profile for something that's going to attempt the same kind of shit.

I await BHEs butthurt response.

I've been sort of off on google since they axed my adsense account.

The thing with Google is.. they have wonderful ideas, but they suck at follow through. They suck at marketing.

They always leave their service in beta and then they don't mention it to anyone. I mean, I can definitely see how they're trying to build Google+ since they've released the +1 button. They're trying to make everything you do more social on the internet. Trying to take out the... Google something... oh this is cool.... copy and paste into Facebook. Instead you click that +1, and it's shared to your whole Google+ crowd.

But I have no idea if that's how it works anyway. I just want Google to do something right for a change. They're still an awesome company, but I feel like they've faltered because they have SO many projects going on and they don't have any idea which way to go.

It's lame, copycat, and the profile page is ugly.

Google can't do anything right anymore. The only hope they've got is that the +1 button dupes enough people into signing up.

Well in a way I think they were ahead of themselves with Wave. The tool was very interesting, but they hadn't quite figured out a way to leverage it into peoples lives and being a distinct entity from Gmail rather than it being integrated was a huge mistake in terms of adoption. It looks like with Google + they are probably going to leverage that technology. A big thing is going to be about how much push/pull the whole thing has.

i would very much like an invite if possible, and if i figure out how to receive any i would be willing to share. gotta keep up with social media bullshit, woot woot.

and anybody shitting on this, at the very least it should prove enough competition for facebook to eliminate the unhealthy monopoly it was becoming. no one company should rule the top of anything like this with an iron fist, and myspace has been long dead. not too excited that it had to be google, who will someday rule all of the internets, but hey, anything less for that douche zuckerberg.

I probably won't get on this. I can't be bothered moving off Facebook, and have all my privacy settings really high anyways. The only google things I use often are gmail and calendar. And somehow the calendar is really easy to use if you know what you're doing, but hard to explain to new users. Also I hate how Google tends to assume the people you email are your friends for things like google chat. I have gchat off, but it's just a list of acquaintances I barely even remember. I've probably only emailed my actual friends once or twice, ever.

So, I'm going to sign up and try it out at least. It'd be unfair to cast it off without using it.

I surmise, however, my account will probably end up not getting used. :p

Facebook is a goddamn waste of time. It's useful when you're in college for organizing events and such, but once you're out, it's just 300 of your 'friends' making posts about shit that no one cares about to make them feel good about themselves. It's an attention whores paradise, I'm glad I deactivated my acct

yeah it's nothing like the productive nature of video game forums

Looks interesting, I'd like an invite if anybody has any spare.

can I have an invite? PM me (or tell me to PM you), as I'm using my "private" gmail
