First I want to say that HL2 kicks @ss, just wish I could play it without it locking up or let me online.
My first issue is with Steam. When I try to play CS, Steam shows me a 'browse games' page. If I click 'servers' from the icon, once I select servers it takes me to that browes games screen again and again  . I have a Steam account and the first night it rocked, now, it is trying my patience. When I click the 'register.....' key in the browse games window, it says I already have registered with that game, which I did the other night. When I click the icon it says I need to wait an hour or so. Any one have any ideas? Don't remember these problems in the good 'ole Team Fortress days.

My next problem is with my machine. It is an Abit AV8, AMD64 3800, 2- 512's of Corsair 4000 DDR, 2 striped 160gig Hitachi drives, a 580 watt modular psu and a eVGA 6800 Ultra video card. After playing CS for an hour it locks up like a rock, with video card error messages, "your video card has experienced a problem and its settings have been reduced, not enough voltage", or something to that effect.I use two seperate power cables to the card, not the 'pigtailed' adapter they send. After it did it again, stepped up from the 480 watt Enermax to this 580. Did it again so I thought maybe its heat, went to a Zalman "flower" CPU cooler, installed two Stealth fans in the side of the acrylic case blowing on the board and card, one in the top blowing out, one in the rear blowing out and one in the front blowing in. The hard drives are mounted in some hard drive coolers that have squirrel caged fans blowing into the machine also. The drives don't get over 85 degrees Farenheit. Any of you run a 6800 Ultra and experienced any of these problems? Anyone have ANY ideas?

Thank you in advance,
Insom

I wonder if Steam might be updating CS:S. Try right-clicking on the little Steam icon and looking at the "monitor" and seeing if you have an internet activity, or any non-Steam monitor you might have that shows internet activity.

I have the same motherboard (with a AMD64 3500+) and am getting lockups as well.

I was thinking it might be a power problem also but don't seem to get any lockups with other games. Looking at your hardware, you should have no problems what so ever playing the game.

Hopefully someone will fix this soon.

You are right Doomed, it was updating CSS, just caught it on a busy night.
Machine locked up on me again. With the kind of money put into this machine, this should NOT be happening. Anyone have any hardware answers for me?
