Got Pink and Black Textures or no textures and only wireframe? I know the problem....

Right, so I was in the same boat as a lot of people yesterday. I had Pink and Black checked textures and missing textures with only wireframe models showing.

Similar to this: http://www.pbase.com/stevierg/image/36455404/original.jpg

After some investigation using the console I could see the source engine was giving out errors about specific files, so I used a tool to extract the data from the GCF files.

Guess what... the files that came up with error in the game contain no data. They have the correct size but have no information in the file, just blank data.

So somewhere something has been corrupt. Steam is of course the blame for this one...

I can't believe they never put a CRC file check to make sure every user had the correct files. It is just lazy programming if you ask me and somebody at valve needs a lesson.

I have the same problem what do I have to redownload to fix it???

Get properties on your Half Life 2 game and selected Delete Local Content then download the game again.

Sad but true. :(

yep, or buy it from shops

Yes pay for it again good idéa stupid.
There should be some file I can redownload and it should work?

just download the meterials Chash file.
that fixed it for me.

no problem with missing textures; but from time to time textures are going 70', displayed in a rainbow-colored style. sometimes complete walls, sometimes only some pixels(especially on the guns). fixable it is by quicksave/-load. card isn't oc'ed nor is it to hot.

disabling ai (ati) reduced this, but it's still there.

Sounds like an over heating problem.
Have you over clocked your graphics card?

No, do not listen to these folks here. This problem is NOT heat related (nor drivers as other threads have said), and redownloading the textures or materials files alone will not necessarily help this.

The wireframe/bad textures seems to have been caused on some systems (but not all) by people clicking on HL:S to play, then cancelling because the load time would take so long, then trying to open HL:2 (while HL:S was still downloading).

Some people have had luck redownloading just one or 2 of the resource files, but none of the suggested ones worked for me. The only way I was able to fix this only by uninstalling steam (make sure to have your password/username written down!), then deleting the whole Valve folder, then deleting the valve folder in the registry (it is under either HKLM\Software, or HKCU\Software, I cannot remember which), then reinstalling steam, and redownloading HL2 from scratch. I spent 17+ hours on this yesterday, and this was the only thing that fixed the problem. :(

One of my friends had this problem. He just copied the gcf cache files from my computer and everything worked fine.

Make sure the gcfs are completely downloaded. Will extracting if you get the file has no data error, the gcf isn't complete. Going by the gcf filesize wont hope coz sometimes even if its incomplete it will show the complete gcf filesize. So just keep checking in the moniter while downloading, don't start a game before it's completely downloaded/updated. Applies for all Steam games.

redownload the materials file. It worked for a friend of mine.

Steam version.

Had the same probs at first. I installed ati's 4.9 drivers and re-dled hl2, so I have no idea which fixed the prob. Before this I tried 4.11, 4.12 beta catalyst drivers, and even tried the omegas, but still had the prob. Only prob I have now is the sound skipping shiat.

meanwhile ive extracted all (hl2-)cache files into my hl2-folder, while it doesn't solve my "textures are going to become drugged" problem, it seems the stuttering has been reduced drestically. level loading times perhaps too(uncertain about this). after this, everytime i entered a new lvl, something about "level node data is outdated, generating new " appears, then hl2 stops working for some secs(game is frozen during this time).

btw, my agp isn't oc'ed, neither is my cpu. idle temperatures are 29 degrees celsius for my mobo, 45 for my cpu, and for my agp im not sure about.(got one of those 9600xt with missing temp-sensor).
