"Women seeking abortions in Mississippi must first sign a form indicating they've been told abortion can increase their risk of breast cancer. They aren't told that scientific reviews have concluded there is no such risk."

The brochure, he said, is a reflection of the "very, very strong pro-family, pro-life leaning" of Louisiana.

The issue continues to be debated in state legislatures, with bills considered this year in Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Vermont, Washington and West Virginia.

the line between government and moral gaurdian continues to blur

Expoiting breast cancer in order to make a political statement?
Well, that's just plain, unabashed evil.

I'd love to see someone come up with an excuse for this particular baseless emotional appeal.

hmm I may open a can of worms with this statement but .... I wonder if it has anything to do with the rise of the christian right

I was going to open that same can of worms, but didn't want to shift the topic at all before it's properly debated.

But, since I brought it up in pretty much every other thread, I might as well mention the similarities to the gay marriage ban, amoung other things. :p

Let's check the situation:
-The christian right dislikes both abortion and gay marriage.

-The christian right is a strong, if not the strongest, supporter of the current administration.

-Abortion and gay marriage both have laws passed against them for no logical reason, for distinctly unamerican but extremely christian purposes.

-MechaG is perplexed that a society that cherishes freedom could let this happen.

Yep, can o' worms.

You are dead on. I am becoming extremely worried that our country is slowly becoming a Christian State. This is clear from the election where the only thing that mattered was the candidates faith, everything else was thrown out the window. I love how the religious folk around this country don't seem to mind either, it doesn't matter if it endangers our country as long as their needs are being met. I have nothing against religious people, but are they f*cking blind or just stupid as they do not see the damage they are doing to this country.

the current administration is on it's second and final term ...who knows how far they'll go when they have nothing to lose

isnt bush a creationist, against abortion and against same-sex marriage? Personally I would never vote for someone who had even one of these ideologies

It's one thing to believe in Creationism, be against same-sex marriage, and be against abortion. It's quite another to impose those those beliefs onto other people.

See, Kerry was a Catholic. But he had stated time and time again that he didn't believe that his religious beliefs should be used as grounds for law.

I'm pretty sure Kerry had much the same religious beliefs as Bush. The difference is that Bush went out of his way to make his beliefs into law, while Kerry said specifically that he would not irresponsibly impose his beliefs on a multicultural society.

Although I, like anyone, would prefer to have a president that represents my specific viewpoints, I at least wouldn't mind a president who leaves his creationism and gay-hate in church, where it belongs.

Edit: ...like Absinthe said.

What really bugs me about this is that any future attempt to repair this sort of damage is going to be called an "anti-christian liberal agenda," when really it'd just be a restoration of fair politics and responsible government.

Like in another thread, someone was complaining that liberals are dumb because calling a gay marriage ban illogical is going to insult christians and make them vote for the conservative side in even greater numbers.
Forget the fact that it is, by definition, illogical to ban gay marriage.

Seriously though, America is becoming a theocracy at this rate, and it's largely Bush's fault.

Bush supports a gay marriage ban that contradicts constitutional law.
Conservative christians are taught not to like gays, and therefore vote for Bush in record numbers.
Gays, liberals, and many others leave the country out of protest over Bush winning at the expense of constitutionality. The world feels less admiration towards America. Less non-christian immigrants move in.
Conservative christians become a larger majority.
Bush supports linking abortion with cancer.
Conservative christians are taught not to like abortion, and therefore support the administration.
Gays, liberals, and many others leave the country out of protest over Bush winning at the expense of constitutionality, leaving more conservatives. The world feels less admiration towards America. Less non-christian immigrants move in.
Conservative christians become a larger majority.
Etc. :p

One way to see secular government is like a house. There are two people in the house: unimaginatively named Democrat and Republican. They both work together to keep the house maintained, stopping occasionally to go church across the street. Since keeping the house sturdy has nothing to do with church, they decide to leave any god-based disagreements at church.

Everything continues peacefully until Republican invites Religion, from the chrurch across the street, into the house. And Religion never leaves.

Religion starts making irrational demands, like that Democrat should go sleep in the garage. There's no reason for Democrat not to stay in the house, but Religion says he should be cold, and Republican always tries to keep Religion happy.

So, Democrat is locked out of the house, while Republican and Religion have a jolly fun time. Without Democrat, Republican does all the maintenance on his own. But there are some aspects of home repair that only Democrat understood, and the house slowly, but surely, falls apart.

And then Democrat moved to Canada, where he lived happily ever after.

The moral of the story:

When a canadian has use Schoolhouse Rock-level metaphor to slowly describe a basic lesson on american politics to americans, something is seriously, seriously wrong.

Come on, where are all the religious fanatics that think this is ok? This topic is boring when there is so much agreement :dozey:.

"very, very strong pro-family, pro-life leaning" of Louisiana."

This is Louisiana. What would you expect in terms of this discussion? :D

Better worded, and now you'll get attention, No limit. :D

You don't hear much about them because most of them know their religion shouldn't influance the government. Lets call them the sane christians.

"The Bush Administration has decided that it will stand by its approval for a book claiming the Grand Canyon was created by Noah’s flood rather than by geologic forces, according to internal documents released today by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility "

oh dear god no

btw I remeber seeing Pat robertson on tv 2 days after 9/11 blame homosexuals pagans, and feminists for the tragedy:

"Television evangelists Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, two of the most prominent voices of the religious right, said liberal civil liberties groups, feminists, homosexuals and abortion rights supporters bear partial responsibility for Tuesday's terrorist attacks because their actions have turned God's anger against America.

"God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve," said Falwell, appearing yesterday on the Christian Broadcasting Network's "700 Club," hosted by Robertson.

"Jerry, that's my feeling," Robertson responded. "I think we've just seen the antechamber to terror. We haven't even begun to see what they can do to the major population."

Falwell said the American Civil Liberties Union has "got to take a lot of blame for this," again winning Robertson's agreement: "Well, yes."

Then Falwell broadened his blast to include the federal courts and others who he said were "throwing God out of the public square." He added: "The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say, 'You helped this happen.' "

Haha yea I heard about that awhile back, figures coming from somebody who said:
The Washington Post, August 23, 1993; "(T)he feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians."

But of course it gets a hell of alot worse that that, I cant remember the name of the organization but there is one of creationists out there right now spreading tons of misinformation about evolution. The difference between them and most creationists is that they arent using biblical references. They are using scientific rethoric in front of the public when the majority of the people couldnt possibly know what the hell they are talking about cause it requires a hell of alot of knowledge on biology!
People just accept it cause they have no clue. So sad.

- they should burn him at the stake for hate-mongering ..either that or throw him into a turkish prison with the words "I love Men" tattooed on his naked butt. Seriously, what's more disturbing than hearing the bile come out of his mouth is that a lot of people agree with him

I know I do. :p

And that canyon thing is the single most pathetic thing I've heard since abortion being erroneously linked to cancer.

I had steak for dinner today. Steak is made from cows, which the bible says arrived on Noah's ark.

I think I'll write a book called "The True Story Of Beef: A Christian Perspective", and then the Bush administration will pay me millions to send copies to every Arby's franchise in America.

Since facts are apparently not required, it practically writes itself!
Hell, I could just slap the word "christian" and a few bible quotes on any old peice of shit and get big bucks.

Crap, my internet messed up and caused a double-post.

While I'm here, I might as well point out a recent cover story in the news here that described how the Bush squad's anti-abortion policies in africa caused a massive upsurge in illegal unsafe abortions.

oh my lord! Louisiana! My own state! For shame, ya'll!
