For my graphic design project, I need to come up with two sets of 25 positive an negative things about America. I am coming up with a set myself, but I want the other set to be from someone outside the US.

I would really appreciate someone giving a list 25 positive and 25 negative things they can think of about america. You dont have to do all of them, just say as many as you want since I can take them from multiple people. Please keep it relatively non-political though, I dont want the thread turning into a political debate. While it may be difficult, please try and get some positives. Dont just focus on the negatives, because 100 negatives and 0 positives doesnt help.

To get you started, my professor gave an example of her friend from england who came over to the US and stayed with them. When they asked him where he wanted to eat, he said he wanted to go to Hooters, and was all excited because he never really saw anything like it. So that would be a positive thing (or negative if you look at it from the women's standpoint).

So yeah, thanks in advance for your help fellas.

Your not going to find a foreigner that can list 25 positive things about America. There is no such thing as positive news so they don't hear about it. All they are going to hear is the negative because that is what people find interesting.

And..that's all the other countries see on the news about america is negative news...it's true because I'm foreign and very rarely do we see anything postitive about America..but your right...people find negative stuff more interesting...media loves it also.

America's spoiled style
America's self pride EX: "we are the greatest country in the world" "US president is the most powerful man on earth" Even on childrens cartoon shows
America's people (yes, the people, i hate)

Actually, I could list 30 things I loved about America, and I'm rather British. I think you're stuck in the mentality that it's The World vs. The Americans, there. Seriously, the US was an awesome country to visit. I'd love to do it again.

So many stereotypes... this is gonna be hard.

Things I love about america (interpret these how you will)

1. American cars, some of these are beautiful.
2. The people, many complain about american people, but I've never met or spoken to an american man/woman I didn't like
3. TV shows and Movies, Lost and 24 plus loads of movies that I love.
4. ARPANET, I think this system was the foundation of the internet we have today.

You might be able to get a couple of reasons from that, I dunno.

Pros:

1. Makes the world more interesting
2. movies

Cons:

1. 0 morals
2. No ethics

Too big military
Too conservative

Privatized Education - Some parents are babies and over protective..whatcha gonna do \=

All I can think of now...
D: Dont ask why I put my commentary, I'm tired ;(

Pros: One of the centres for the development of our modern society. Science, society and the arts have evolved considerably with this.

Cons: Habours some backwards thinking people, using modern weapons and technology to uphold old testament ideals.

Ignorance of other countries, such as thinking the UK is England

WAHT!?

You mean its not: Great Britan = United Kingdom = England?

To be fair, most of us have a similar kind of ignorance when it comes to the Netherlands (not equal to Holland).

I'm confused. :rolling:

This is actually really interesting. It's refreshing, and at the same time kind of saddening that all the people that have been able to visit us, say we're pretty nice people. Yet I get the impression that people who haven't think we're the asses of the world. But hey, like people said. Why would the media promote good things?

Was it necessary to make a thread on America bashing? Surely you could have just read 50% of the posts on this board.

That doesnt make any sense. This isnt bashing America, please stay on topic.

And thank you to everyone who has posted. I never thought of the movie industry, so thanks for that one. It really shows how much of a different perspective we have, like someone said that whenever people here get angry we riot... thats gotta be your media talking, because riots rarely happen here. Probably not even once a year.

Great stuff, please keep it coming. And again, I know its hard, but lets get some positives too

who's list.

1 - obescity - I'll give you this one.
2 - dohnuts - Goes with obesity, and they're gross.
3 - the big mcdonald - Goes with obesity too, and they are everywhere, so you can't blame us.
4 - coffee bars - Umm??
5 - american arrogance - Is a stereotype.
6 - american ignorance - Is a stereotype.
7 - the half of america that voted for bush - Hah, so true.
8 - the people. when something goes wrong RIOT!... refer back to 5 and 6 - I can't remember the last time America had a real riot.. where is this coming from?
9 - they cant spell colour! - No we have a different way, have some honor! Haha.
10- they cant pronounce aluminium! - Yes we can.

Too much pride - Not really
Too much patriotism - You're right about that, but what's wrong with being a proud American?
Segregation - Wth are you talking about

I always knew people hated America.

As you said, you're a "proud American". There's nothing wrong with that, but if it continues like it has, you might soon turn into state where your pride stops you from ever critize your own country.

Nothing, but I get the impression that you're more a little more patriotic than is healthy.
Segregation - Wth are you talking about
The segregation is nothing that the government supports, but it's still there. I've been to New York, I've been to LA, I notice these things. There're black neighbourhoods and there're white, and hispanic and asian and so on. If you (as a society) keep people divided like this you will never be whole as a nation.
I always knew people hated America.
I don't.

^I'm not patriotic, I'm saying that the majority of America is patriotic. And I don't really care if the people that live here are patriotic, let them be.

And well our segregation isn't what it use to be in the 1920s, where certain people were forced to be in a certain area in the country. We have the freedom to live where ever we want, it's just up to us to do it. The thing about America, is that it's so diverse, we have people who hates America and they live there, then you have people who loves it. I appreciate that.

I wouldn't be calling Americans ignorant if you can't even think of or at least willing to think of 25 positive qualities about the US. By the way I am Canadian so yes I am foreign.

These are in no particular order.

1. American muscle cars, love the power.
2. Only world super power.
3. Proud of its history. (Yes this is a positive thing since nations that have no pride usually don't last long.)
4. Beautiful scenery and wilderness as well as being very diverse.
5. Very warm in the south and in Hawaii.
6. A lot of history and a lot of culture.
7. Hollywood movies (certainly not all of course).
8. Video games and video game companies. Like Half-Life and Valve.
9. Google and many other tech companies.
10. Birth of the modern incarnation of the internet.
11. Willingness to spend money on space exploration.
12. Birth of Jazz music, rock and roll, and many other different kinds of music.
13. Nice people, or at least about the same percentage of nice people when compared to most other countries.
14. Largest contributer to technological development in the modern world.
15. Willing to fight for what it believes in. This is a good thing, what can be bad is what is believed in.
16. Plans ahead for its own survival.
17. Takes a lot of punishment. Personally I view this as a good thing since its only through conflict and adversity that we truly evolve, see my signature.
18. Birth of nuclear power. Also a good thing since until we discover something like anti-matter, nuclear power is really going to be our best bet for many things. People need to stop only thinking of nuclear weapons and declaring nuclear research "bad".
19. One of the only nations in the world that has actually been actively trying to change other parts of the world. This is a good thing, only debate is in whether they are changing things the right way.
20. Appears to have been the origin of modern day "liberalism", which is kind of ironic.
21. Its people are some of the richest in the world.
22. Accepts more immigrants than any nation in the world and from any nation in the world.
23. Food and clothing are about as cheap as you can get.
24. Very strong politic activism for all sides inside the country.
25. Probably has been the largest source for social, economic, military, and political experiments for the rest of the world to learn from since it was created.

Most of America's "cons" can be applied to almost any large country, as well as the Pros.

Why you are doing this specifically for America, who knows, but you're just begging for criticism from all sorts of groups.

Its a good experiment really. I agree that the majority of cons that America will have can easily be applied to almost all other countries out there. I also see that if you were to research enough you would find that just about every country out there that has a history of more than a century you will be just as bad as American can be.

This is what makes it a good experiment or a good way of proving a point. Ask non-Americans to list the good things and bad things about America and you will find far more negative things. Ask non-Canadians for instance to find the negative and postive points about Canada and you will probably find far more positive points, however altogether there will be very few points made at all due to a lack of knowledge.

On a completely seriously note;

I'd like to thank each and every one of you for not turning this into a flame fest. I can see and except all of the cons and pros that you all view about America. I agree with almost all of the too.

There's just one person missing in this thread in my opinion, and I would seriously be honored if he attended, as I'm quite interested (in a positive way) about his opinion.

I know why... its my assignment. :naughty:

Thank you Mullinator, thats exactly what I was looking for. I appreciate that very much.

And like top secret said, thanks for being cool with this thread, and not using it to bash/flame. I really like this forum, because it actually has quite a few mature people. Thanks for that too.

Allright, i'll help i suppose. i'm canadian so.. count that as you will.

Pro: Economic thunder-god of the modern world.
Con: Sacrifices the environment and violates international law in order to retain said power.

(Yeah, not paying for your natural gas when you had all those brownouts was really awesome of you america. really. owing us $3bill for saving your electric asses and then not paying STILL is getting a little tiresome. and lets not even get into the whole soft-wood lumber tariff.)

Pro: you guys have everything, everything! you can buy EVERYTHING you want in america, Bawls for example.

Con: you cant buy it anywhere else!!!! DAMN YOU NEWEGG FOR NOT SHIPPING TO CANADA. Jesus we're RIGHT ABOVE YOU. it's not like we're in spain or something.

Pro: uuhm... the people really know how to party?

Con: I've actually met some incredibly pretentious and arrogant americans, not saying everybody is. just that i've never really met a canadian one. :p

Bottom Line: America is a good place to be if your american. Everyone else does not like america because basically america cheats, the whole "ends justify the means" thing.

mmm, yep, i have a mcdonalds big mac in one hand and a glazed donut in the other! good times
