so I found a new PC which I'll probably buy at some point, a friend of mine who knows something about computers said it'll be fine for me. however I''m not sure about the graphics card, tis' a nvidia Geforce 8200. these are the games I definately have/will have:

the orange box (excluding TF2),
call of duty 4,
assassin's creed,
rome total war,
the sims 3,
black mesa source,
half-life 2 episode 3.

I want to double check I have a decent graphics card; help will be much appreciated.

Well, you don't actually have a graphics card, the 8200 is an integrated graphics chip on the motherboard. Integrated graphics are mostly just there for multimedia and basic computing (office stuff), playing movies, older games, doing your homework, etc. You might be able to get by with low settings on CoD4, Assassin's Creed, and the Source game like HL2/TF2, etc., the older games will run a little better.

You could get a 9600gt for about $90.

are you sure because the assistant in PC world said that it would do well for gaming, also I googled it just now and from what I saw it actually seemed pretty decent?

*I live in the UK, which is weird cos' I think I saw it on the PC world website for 90
pounds, it sould technicaly be about ?45 seeing as you said it costs about 90 dollars?

Edit: I just looked at it on the nvidia website; it said "enjoy today's popular games and more"? you may have just been rinsed.

I'm quite confused now. Are you buying a PC or laptop? As said above 8200 isn't a graphics card, it's an integrated chip and to say it could run Assassins Creed is madness! Could you link us directly to the model you want to buy?

Also another point, don't buy anything from PC World, they are thieves. They hike their prices and their stuff is rubbish. Go through etailers, these below are all highly reputable.

www.ebuyer.co.uk
www.scan.co.uk

If you only played older games maybe. (or if you played kind-of-recent games at bare minimum)

I'm getting a PC, HG, I've got no idea how you post a link, but I'll give you the computer's model name for you to search:
Tis' a Backard Bell iMedia X2326

also, what you just said about PC world is rubbish.

Never buy from overclockers, the guy who runs it is a known racist and a homophobe. Ebuyer and Scan are better options.

Also I wouldn't say that PCWorld are thieves necessarily, but you do pay through the nose for what you get compared to E-tailers. However if you need something quickly any port in a storm.

Since you clearly already know so much about grapics cards and retailers, why are you even asking for advice?

An 8200 won't run anything, other than at settings which will make your eyes bleed. PCWorld are too expensive.

I ordered my complete build from OCuk, and ordered my graphics card last. I was waiting for the night they received it, for it to be packaged and shipped to me. As the night drew to a close, I got nothing. I posted on their forums, and 10 minutes later the Managing Director from OCUK called my home phone and apologises and personally put my graphics card on the truck and it arrived the next day. They have given the me best customer service of any e-tailer.

It's not rubbish, retailers increase the price of their products to pay overhead costs of running retail outlets, it's a fact. Also their employees blind you with science so they get commission. They are trying to sell you their rubbish, I get no bonus from helping you. If you'd rather ignore us, then you're choosing poorly.

The fact you can't post a link, and that you don't know it's Packard Bell not Backard Bell, tells me you really know little about computers. They are expensive purchases and you must be very sure you are buying well. I don't want you choosing badly and not getting a good deal, if you like I'd be happy to speak to you over the phone or via email if you need help choosing something which will play your games well.

edit: I believe I've found your product? http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/237074

I have to say that Glenn is 100% correct about retailers feeding you bullshit. I've worked in retail in a computer store and that's all the managers brainwash the floor guys to do is "Sell, sell, sell. No matter what."

Listen. To. Glenn. As your sig states, it's safer here.

yeah that's it, and backard bell was a typing mistake.

I've said this before, but any Nvidia gfx chip/card with a series designator number lower than x6xx is not a gaming card/chip.

You need a x6xx series of GeForce card or higher. Indeed though, the 9600gt card is pretty nice if your on a budget. Get it. If you've got money to spare, go for the gtx instead though. Also, if you shopping Nvidia for gaming. Also stay away from anything ending in, LE or GS and if your like me and don't like overclocked cards, OC or SC. (superclocked)

EDIT> I don't know what ATI family/series numbers mean though.

If it's a card or onboard graphics does not matter but might just confuse. The model does matter.
8200 is a very basic chip. Yes it is newish (<2 years old?). Yes, some games will run on it.

BUT current games will run only at 10-30 FPS with low to medium detail and 1024x768 resolution. Increase detail or resolution and it won't be playable. And depending on how advanced the game is it may not be playable no matter what.
'Old' games like Battlefield 2 will run fine but I can't see someone recommending the 8200 for gaming at all.
Even the 8500 is meant for multimedia video playback rather than games. The horse power isn't there to do current games well.

Some benchmarks of the Nvidia 8200 = XFX Intergrated on the charts
Call of Duty 4
UT3
Crysis

There really isn't any other gaming cards in this review but you can see the frame rate is 3fps, 13fps and 20 fps in those games (Ignore 3dmark, it's not a game.)

I don't know about you but my basic LCD has a 1280x1024 resolution. So even if I didn't mind my games being choppy as hell I would still need a better card to drive those games at that resolution (the games benchmarked above were at 1024x768). Sure I can set the resolution lower but images don't look as good at a different resolution than your LCD display's native resolution.
