I just had a brainwave!

This wouldn't surprise me if this was answered in a weeeee smaaaaaalll bit of the forum and everyone and their aunty saw it except me so here goes;

If you can fire fast enough, (thats the big prob), do you think it'd be possible to lift yourself off the ground with the grav gun? afterall it is a gravity gun! :E

If it is possible, it could make for some interesting levitating puzzles, (remember the big toxic waste drums in hl1, and you had to jump from mixer-arm to mixer-arm? lol imagine that whilst levitating!)

I thought that the only limitations there could be are...

1) Weight. Although we see the 'push' secondary function of the grav gun pushing the buggy back onto the road in e3 2004 vid and so it could be able to lift 80kg up in the air.

2) ROF (rate of fire). If from one fire you lift 1jumps-worth up in the air, if you can't fire again due to ROF until you're on the ground again you might aswel jump :p

3) That dial. There's a dial to the left of the grav gun. I thought this might be a 'amount-you-can-use' dial before it needs to recharge itself. But on the e3 2004 vid you can't see it go down when he fires it alot. (it just wobbles a bit).

:) What does everyone else think?

The dial is a weight meter.

no levitating
never noticed the dial, gota go check that out.

I think it would be a strange dynamic for the game, and one I frankly probably wouldn't like. Something like this should be, though, "easy to mod in" (tm) I imagine others would probably like it too. Probably the same crazies who liked Tribes.

i thought tribes II was one of the greatest games of all time!

this guy isa crazy

i shouldn't post when sleeps

I guess I'm crazy then too...

what's so bad about Tribes? One of the best games ever!!!

reminds me of gauss jumping :)

btw. tribes 2 is still one of the best online games ever, fast, furious, easy to learn, hard to master and keeps you occupied for quite some time.

Yea sounds alot like gauss/tau jumping. I never liked that so if you can, i doubt ill like it. And gauss jumping wasnt in the single player, people only discovered it in multi-player.The Zero Point Manipulator is gonna rock anyway.(Thought id use its proper name, not "Grav gun" :-p)

will the gauss be hand held this time, or only on the buggy?

Well, on a movie i saw from the beta(no spoilers here!) the guy stod on a plate used the manipulator on it and jumped, so everytime he jumped he pulled the plate closer to him so he could gain altitude. Adn he dident fall down. Odd. But Valve will 110% remove this bug/fault/feature in the finl version. Again, there were NO spoilers or similar in my post.

i dont like the idea of pushing urself up :(

ok with the normal zero point gun that u see in the phystown blink video u cannot use objects to levitate. But with the more powerfull physgun , thats the one with the blue beam that was in the e3 tech demo..You CAN jump on top of barrels look downward fire the beam then press back 'S' usually. This will make u float upwards with the barrel; pushing u skywards lol !! but u get so high and u slide off the barrel and u fall back down to earth :/

where do you know that from is that a spoiler ?

If you want to get technical, its a manipulator gun. Like Eli or Kliener (I forgot who) said, "Its a manipulator gun. Not a gravity gun." Heard that from Codename: Gordon..that lil flash thing but w/e..Its easier to type Gravity Gun...

But still, it's a great idea, Chris. You could jump, then fire the GG (Grav Gun)

Also with the GG you could (in a bullshit mod) lift buildings :dork:

its not possible there is a big delay between shots when you fir the ' zero point gun' as its called the the *you know what*

The Grav gun is awesome, u can get somethin underneath you, and as u grab it, jump, physics and rocket jump strategy will take you to new heights. However if they decide to keep it that way, it's gonna make online play very laggy and very bizarre so i don't reckon it will be in the final version, at least it shouldn't, i dunno.
Would also like to apologise for owning the hl2 beta and finding this theory out. I honestly don't own it anymore.

I'm with AJ Rimmer on this one.

Besides, you realise that with a rocket jump, you most of the time wind up killing yourself, right? (According to my attempts in HL1 on MultiPlayer :D I settle for Tau Cannon to do my jumping) Only on TFC is a rocket jump more helpful..

yep thats right...but it works better with the physgun^^ (saw it at a friend)

how much weight CAN you pick up with the GRav. gun? a car? a person? (THAT would be fun!!)

it's not only the objects weight, it's also an option in the mapeditor....
but i cant tell you exactly...50 kg?

ok lets say max is 50kg, if two people on a server both used manipulators on the same object, do you tink you could pick up 100kg?

If so you could probs pick up buildings if whole team help lol!

Also, if two people face each other, use manipulators on each other (they each weigh 80kg) and both run sideways, jump, look up (as if to lift an object) do you think they could both jump further? Wonder how the counter these 'bugs' if they occure....

Could 2 or more people with manipulators pick up larger weights if they combined their efforts? Hmm. Something to think about.

can gordon pick up small birds with his manipulator ? would be fun :p

if you attached 4 supah-powered manipulators to the bottom of a car, all pointing at each other (like a continuous loop) could you invent hover cars?! :D

This sounds like trying to pick yourself up with your own arms. Using the repell function might be another story. But I don't remember being able to launch myself in the air, in the leaked source.
But there's no way you could grab yourself with the manipulator anyway, since you can't see Gordan's body.

You can pick up anything that has mass... just change the max weight the physcannon can hold in the console.
