I got the idea from the art forum where Eatbugs asked us our most respected masters. I'm going to do the same for mus :).

1. Mozart
I think it's Handel that "When the angels play for God, they surely play Bach, but when they play for each other, they play Mozart, and god listens." Mozart has an esquisite ear for beauty, and that's all I can say.
2. Beethoven
Beethoven's moody, unpredictable music has got me under a spell ever since I first heard it. No wonder parts his work are being ripped of by hollywood music still today.
3. Lizst
The Elvis presley of piano. Apparently his music is impossible to play. One thing is sure, it sounds good as heaven.
4. Chopin
One word: Waltz.
5. Ravel
Impressionist music at its best.

I know Classical isn't the big thing right now, but If you like any great composer, or even contemporary (If you like Howard Shore, I'm cool with that) post it here :).

I like Hydn (may have spelled it wrong) I played one of his songs for a trumpet solo.
I come from a classical family (I never liked it all that much but respected it)

"When the angels play for God, they surely play Bach, but when they play for each other, they play Mozart, and god listens."

That is a great quote, ill have to remember that

Beethoven, Mozart, Starvinksy, Bach. Can anyone recommend me anymore classical composers? Besides Starvinksy, I only know the popular ones.

Gustav Holst, John Williams (more contemporary), Tchaikovsky

Ah yes, contemporary composers are good too. I'm a big fan of Clint Mansell and John Williams.

What kind of classical do you like? if its easy on the ear then Debussy, Mendellsohn, Dvorak and Vaughn-Williams are good bets. For the harsher sounds, try Bartok, James McMillan (contemporary) and Schoenberg.
My favourite pieces at the moment are the 2 string quartets by Janacek. They are remarkable because they have harsh sounds put next to brilliant harmonies and melodies that could make you weep :D.
EDIT: Good call on Ravel btw - he has composed some really strange but likeable stuff.

I like Howard Shore :)

I haven't heard much classical music, but what I've heard has been excellent. I also know only the famous ones, Mozart, Beethoven, Bach etc...
My favourite composition, based on my narrow knowledge, would be Bach's "Toccata and Fugue" (if that's what it's called)

That's probably his most famous organ piece.

I also recommend Shostachovic and Prokofiev, two great russian composers.

I'm actually not from a classical family at all. My dad listens to rock, my mom to "dead can dance" and my sister to shitty music (pop, etc...) I just recently picked up classical.

Here are a few recommendations that haven't been mentioned yet...

George Gershwin
Franz Schubert
Nicolo Paganini
Franz Liszt
Claude Debussy
Joahannes Brahms
Joseph Haydn

Yes! I love all of the above. I did mention Liszt though.

<3 Rhapsody in blue.

Ahh, yes...you did mentioned him. My fault in overlooking that.

Rhapsody in Blue is indeed a lovely song. ;)

Mozart
Beethoven
