Story.

Man, I hope he's right. Its tough being an Independent in this country in this day and age and political climate. I think he has a very good point and the great divide that has become even greater between Reps/Dems lo these last few years should only serve to show smart-minded people that extreme left/extreme right is just wrong. Moderation is the key to a long, happy, healthy life and that is true in politics, food, religion, gaming, etc. Extremism only serves to further divide people. Thoughts?

you dont need a voice form the center ..the democrats do that now

I think much like ralph nadar and ross perot he doesnt stand much of chance ...as weird as this sounds I think the only chance a independent would ever be elected would be if he was a celebrity. Someone like Nader would be great in the president's office but the public in general are more concerned of how popular a person is rather than how fit for the position he is (the only explanation I can come up with in the case of bush)

Exactly, it's all about charisma and how your presidential campaign sells you, if you're a big talker who makes all these promises, you're far more likely to get in then anyone who would be far more suited to the position to lead a country. Which is one of the big reasons i don't like Democracy, as you have to rely on a very large group of people making the right decision, something that has most probably never happened before in human history.

You have two major right-wing parties but no left-wing, and that's a problem.

It's only splitting the left wing vote.

Can I point out the obvious - If Greenspan himself ran as an independent he'd get a huge mandate and possibly win

The problem isn't that they provide a voice from the center but that they don't provide anything other than an alternative to the far right which is where we are now. They don't have any sort of cohesive platform at all. The right independent would be nicely able to provide a middle ground for everyone. That's the idea at least.

I agree. Neither Kerry nor Bush was fit for 2004. Look at Arnie in CA and Jesse the Body in MN and Swannie in PA (probably). Popularity rules and it would be very interesting to see a smart, politically moderate celebrity make a run at the White House. George Clooney probably wouldn't be too bad if we had to pick. He's a very intelligent guy and that is more important than any party politics. :)

...and the right only provides an alternative to the left...see how that works. And if an independent were introduced he would only provide an alternative from the right and left. :O

Ross Perot had a chance in '92 against Bush and Clinton. For a few years in the early 90's we were essentially in elections a three party system. Even real young during Clinton's reelection I remember everything about Dole and Perot, we did a lot in class about it, and my parents rallied for Dole.

Hehe, that was a tense election. My parents were already politically angry at each other over the 92 election. My aunt (mom's sister) and dad voted for Perot and my mom for Bush. Haha arguements STILL to this day about that!!
