played GTA IV on my friend's 72' Samsung TV the other day just to see how bad ass it would look. Sorry to say that I was dissapointed though. The character model's looked helluva lot crisper, but everything else looked bleh. :P So blurry. It seemed to make the distant lod and anisotropic filtering alot worse tbh.

What's the current leading resolution in high-def televisions and has anyone played GTA IV on it yet? Look any better than 1080i?

I swear though, 480p on a smaller screen looked much better.

High-def is indeed overrated though. Don't fall into the hype. :P

if you want breathtaking in HD, check out Gears of War or either of the Rainbow Six Vegas games. Coincidentally, both Unreal Engine 3 games :o

1080i is your problem.
GTA4 runs at 720p by default when upscaling is disabled on my PS3. So to go to 1080i wouldn't it have to convert from progressive to interlaced frames...
In video/audio, you always minimize how much you need to convert or redraw the data. Keep it progressive.

Why doesn't GTA IV work well with 1080i though? Do some games support HD better than others?

Like I mentioned, only the character models look any good. Everything else looks like shite.

Does Gears of War and Rainbow Six support this resolution better or something?

How do you fix the problem? Do you know anything about Xbox360 stuff Asus?

EDIT> Oh yeah, there was an option in the dashboard control panel to upscale the resolution to 1080i. That probably was the problem. (Duh :rolling:)

I'll see if that helps any first.

i honestly don't know the technical side of it, i just know it looks gorgeous :P

How do you cram all that tech info into that brain, Asus?

Do you have a neural network processor, a.. Learning computer, perhaps?

I remember that Saturos had 'HDTV is overrated' in his sig.

I run it in 720p on a 40 inch and it looks great, certainly a hell of a lot better than 480p on a smaller screen.

Are you sure you guys knew what you were doing? I've seen plenty of people with HD screens hook up the equipment wrong or use the wrong settings and output it at 480i, with the result being ugly as ****. Also why were you running it in 1080i? GTAIV is 720p native.

I don't see how HD is "overrated". It certainly isn't necessary and many people don't care about such things, which is fine, but it does make the picture much sharper, clearer, and better ...

I wasn't sure if that TV could be scaled down to 720p or not. Besides, we didn't really care at the time anyways.
It was ages since I seen him last, so image quality was the last thing on our minds. (We were drunk)

Next time I visit, (sometimes next week?) I'll be sure give it a more thorough check.

If you believe that HD is overrated, you need to get your eyes tested.

This.

I've got some 720p content on my computer and it looks fantastic. Even my Mother, who is by no means a quality aficionado commented on how clear it looked.

Can't wait for more content on Blu-ray to be released in Australia, I'm really looking forward to getting in on this 1080p action, it must look incredible.

HD is a big improvement over DVD on an HDTV screen.

But HD gaming is overrated compared to PC gaming resolutions...I remember playing JediKnight2 @ 1600x1200 with my GF4 on a 19" CRT back in 2002? and that offers more clarity/detail than 720p/1080p. (16x12 doesn't have more pixels than 1080p but that is only because it is not as wide since it's 4:3 ratio. Got to cut the edges to compare the same scene.)

There's no room for opinion here, it's a fact that HD has superior image quality, especially on larger screens. 480p SD resolution stretched onto a big screen is ugly, there's no way you couldn't see that. Modern TVs are HD, whether you think it's much of a step up or not you'll have to buy one eventually.

Also GTAIV on the PS3 runs at 640p, so stretched onto a huge screen like that it won't look great. But if you think that looked bad, try running SD on that size, then see how overrated HD is.

I run all my 360 games in 1080i. I think the TV is 37". I've tried all the different settings but it seems to look the best.

I don't have 1080p however.

1080i offers better image quality on static scenes, which makes it good for movies and slower paced games. During motion the number of pixels are halved due to the interlacing so 720p is often considered best for gaming since progressive scan displays all the pixels at once.

HD does look a lot better, but I'm hardly bleeding at the eyes since I'm looking at my low-def screen....

You mean you don't notice much of a difference then?

Not all games support progressive scan though. I'm fairly new to console next-gen gaming, so I don't know really if things have changed for the better.

The problem with Hi-res gaming on PC though is that you'll need more VRAM on your vid card to compensate for those extra pixels. I have no idea how console's make up for this on higher def televisions.

I don't own a single game that doesn't support progressive, nor have I ever encountered one. Might have been a problem when the consoles first came out but all releases these days, or at least the major runs, support progressive scan.

It's different on consoles, most games only run on a single resolution so they're developed from the ground up to run on it with no problems. If you go higher or lower, it compensates by downscaling or upscaling the games native resolution.

No, I said "my eyes aren't bleeding from low def" meaning it's not like what I'm doing now is horrible....
Reading comprehension ftw.

If your eye's are bleeding see your Doctor or nearest HD retail outlet.

Vitamin K? Where do you get vitamin K?

I have a HD TV as well as a 19" LCD Monitor. I haven't noticed much of difference when it comes to the visuals. I can only hope that they have improved them in the PC version.
