Now im sure you all read the thread title and though oh christ this loser wants a gta mod. Now as you all know i did have a mod with a full working team to create a sort of gta themed mod. however, since the fall of my mod, i was wondering if there are any serious working mods for this sort of theme. Something along the lines of:

A large city, with skyscrapers, office buildings, apartment complexes, houses, schools, etc...all filled with thier proper character npcs (school kids, office officials, police men, construction workers, etc etc). Then on the streets, cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, etc. Populated areas like malls and shopping centers, npcs roaming the streets...basically, to sum it all up, make a living breathing city that feels real. gameplay wise i dont really care what anyone is doing, but is anyone planning on making a living city something along the lines of what i described?

Probably not, because it's not really possible in Source.

Its not possible on source. But Corporate Anarchy are making large cities (yes we know how we are doing them and yes it is possible, unlike utopea or what ever that mod is called) But you would proberly have to be an anime fan to understand and want to join it really. Go to the website/forums and contact cerbrus, he will tell u more

How is it not possible on source, Ive had emails answered from valve about my mod and they said its very possible to do.

Yup its possible allright , Ive seen em in the valve info thread somewhere...try looking in there you non-believers :)

PiMuRho works in the games industry I think, he knows all this technical shit. Me and him have talked about the capabilites of the source engine before. It was always a good discussion but I lost :( like.... everytime lol. DAM YOU! nar it was never really a winning or losing discussion we just talked about multiplayer capabilites along with how you would make very large cities. You could proberly make a Vice city style of mod, but it would proberly be crap. Just like GTA. I mean... if u look at the actual city and how people react to things and the fact taht nearly all the buildings are empty and just blocks. Its basiclly just a killing game where u steal cars and get run over. In my opinion it gets very boring.

Read what he said. He said all these buildings would be filled with proper NPC's. You just can;t have a citiy with over 100 buildings all with stuff inside and all with AI. That would proberly just blow up your computer. You could proberly make vice city. But you could never really expand on it.

Oh well as others have said and as I've said time and time again. It can't be done on the scale your wanting to do it. MMORPG's haven't yet fully pulled it off, not to that level.

Oh and there's always the entity limits, and the fact THAT many entities and all that AI going off at once. Nope ain't gonna happen. Sorry.

There's ways to fake elements of what is being discussed here, but then you spend more time working on the smoke and mirrors to hide the limitations than you do on actually making the game work.

Think about it - there's a reason why there's no proper multiplayer in GTA3+. Cars and NPCs disappear when you stop looking at them. Even with an engine heavily modified at the source level for that kind of game, Rockstar themselves can't pull it off.

well the thing about this discussion, is that there are a ton of other engines that are more suited towards the job, so why pick source?

Its actucaly very possible and I believe it was done in both GTA and GTA2 multiplayer (where the cars never disapeared, not sure bout the NPC's) the only problem with this is that the game had slowdowns. With GTA3 beimg more complex this would have even more performance issues.

the NPCs etc are all client-side - there's no synchronisation of anything other than players/player vehicles.

You might as well not have NPCs in it.

Have you guys never heard of MultiTheft Auto or the other GTA3/VC multiplayer mods? They did it just fine, and had 32 player servers as well, as I recall.

yes but wasn't all the npc's client based. I am sure they where :P

ops I just read the oither comment, Corporate Anarchy are looking into client side NPC's. But these will be special ones. Its are uber design which will make it work :D
